May 10, 1866: Yick Wo v. Hopkins. Yick Wo owned a laundromat in San Francisco. During this time there was a city ordinance to have a permit for businesses operating in wooden buildings. Wo was then imprisoned by the city's sheriff, Peter Hopkins, for breaking the law. This case was the first in which the U.S. Supreme Court rules discrimination and violates the Equal Protection Clause in the 14th amendment.
