How long has it been? Years, Nezumi lost count. He’d travelled the land, thinking of ‘home’ wherever he went. He wasn’t sure that what he felt was love; he didn’t trust his heart with being able to feel something so pure and innocent. He didn’t think he was able to devote himself.
After No.6 fell, Nezumi was still full of hate. It consumed him and the thought of going in there to live with Shion, or to simply continue living at its outskirts was impossible. No.6 wasn’t destroyed, its walls fell and its nature was blown to pieces—the concept of a Holy City disappeared. It wasn’t an option Nezumi thought he could ever achieve. He didn’t believe in it. Not like Shion did. But it happened and he had to find a way to cope.
Rou had told him to leave, when he fled the Correctional Facility, Rou had told him to abandon hate and overcome his taste for revenge and be ‘free’. But there was no such thing as freedom in a world with No.6 in it and so Nezumi stayed—that time, he survived and kept fighting, doing everything a renegade sixteen-year-old could against a whole city nation.
It ended in a blast—literally. And just like the facility Nezumi fought against, even his life was suddenly blown to pieces. Nezumi let them lie around and left, searching for new pieces of himself and leaving behind all the wrath and madness his heart used to wallow in.
Three years later, Nezumi returned. Just as he’d promised he would. A small part of him always knew that he was going to come back sooner or later, to pick up that one last missing piece of himself which he wasn’t able to give up. His heart had grown soft and he had no other option but to deal with it and accept that certain memories couldn’t be cut, that certain feelings couldn’t be carved out of his beating, broken heart. They dwelled there—Shion, like a soothing balm that Nezumi despised at first because it brought him peace he didn’t want, didn’t think he deserved.
Standing at the horizon, Nezumi gazed down at the valley of No.6 and West Block. Those two lay beside each other like lovers after a brawl. Shion believed in all things possible—Nezumi challenged him to prove it and left him with a task to make the No.6 and West Block one better place. Clearly, whatever Shion had attempted, he failed—
No.6 rejected new inhabitants and began to raise its wall back. That’s what Nezumi learned in West Block, that was the rumour or maybe the truth, he couldn’t really tell anymore. He only stood at the wall looming high into the sky, separating him from the life he came to reclaim.
There was no harmony, no balance, no equality, no peace for all—there was only isolation and Nezumi’s heart broke anew when he realized the path back to Shion was blocked. He never wanted to be a part of anything, not an uprising or another bloodbath. He’d had enough trauma and all he wished for was peace. It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
“No, not like this,” Nezumi whispered to himself, then closed his eyes and took the plunge, letting the invisible hands of chaos that grabbed at him pull him into the turmoil. He never wanted to get involved. He wanted to come back and be with Shion. He wanted to be done fighting. He wanted to be wrong about people. But fate had different plans, clearly, and the only way to Shion lead through a group of self-proclaimed outlaws who wanted to sabotage rebuilding the wall and overtake a part of No.6 for themselves.
People like them were always recruiting and when Nezumi showed a good display of his skills, he was quickly taken into their ranks. From there, it was a swift descent into pandemonium called war and before Nezumi knew it, he was exactly where he both wanted to be and despised being in—inside No.6′s new correctional facility. Locked down as a convict and waiting for his trial; and while the higher-ups would be planning said trial, Nezumi was plotting an escape to freedom—to Shion.
