Becky is a wealth of hockey knowledge and I can count on her to explain or educate me on some near-obscure hockey rule; answering any questions that pop up. Beyond that, Becky is chill (or about as chill as a hockey fan can hope to be) and easy to talk to. And a Caps fan too, always a plus😆
send me a “🥺” and I’ll tell folk why they should follow you

i went with mcgryz for this because gryz has that quote about how he would follow Charlie anyway. Rough sketch but this would make one hell of a full fic

Everyone dies.
So does Matt, except he dies over and over and over again, reborn each time with no memory of his past lives.
Every time he finds Charlie.
Sometimes they are childhood friends. Sometimes their studies bring them together. Other times they meet by random chance. Matt’s cart turns over in a storm and Charlie offers him a ride in his own one. They are soldiers thrown into the same unit. Charlie is the man Matt’s sister is set to marry.
Inevitably he touches Charlie. It’s a manly shake of the hands. It’s a pat on the arm. On the rare occasion it’s a punch. And as soon as their skins touch it comes back to Matt, the memory of tens of life times flooding his head, clouding his vision.
Every time he passes out from the weight of it all. Sometimes he wakes up in Charlie’s arms.
*
This time around they are hockey players. He meets Charlie in BU, creates a bit of a commotion when Charlie picks an evening skate to run him over by accident and then to touch his face to see if Matt is bleeding. Charlie looks really guilty and worried by his side when Matt comes to on the trainer’s table a couple of minutes later and Matt’s chest sinks with dread.
He closes his eyes against the tears pooling in his eyes. The trainers are asking him questions which he should probably answer. Charlie is telling him he will be alright, he will be okay, he will be alright, as if more he repeats it more true it will become.
*
It’s true.
Matt will be okay.
It’s just that all he knew about Charlie yesterday was that he was a rookie, a little shy, and very talented. He didn’t remember what it feels like to hold his broken body and sob, knowing it’s in vain, knowing it will happen over and over again.
You see, he always finds Charlie. Or maybe Charlie always finds him.
They almost always fall in love.
But Charlie doesn’t remember the way Matt does. He didn’t ask for immortality all those lifetimes ago, not the way Matt did.
When I had my bottom wisdom teeth removed, I was really nervous. Before the procedure they gave me like... three Vicodin. My procedure wasn’t surgery so I wasn’t put under, the teeth were just pulled -- so I was awake the whole time. I was so loopy that (I’m told) I hit on my dentist something awful.
My mother also relayed to me that I went on a 15 minute rant (all while my poor dentist was trying to pull out my wisdom teeth) about Edward Cullen in Twilight and how he’d sparkle when he stepped in to the sun. She said I was so mad about it that when the dentist jokingly said, “I think that’s somewhat romantic” I spit blood on his face.

Brad tried to turn and reach to the cup on top of the drawers next to the bed on instinct. Something about almost dying and being out for an indeterminate amount of time always made him thirsty. It was a mistake though, because the moment he did he had to bite his lip against searing pain. Tuukka pushed him back into the bed and let Brad grip his arm until the worst of the pain receded.
“Here, just don’t move,” he said, handing Brad the cup. There were bags under Tuukka’s eyes on close inspection and his curly hair had rebelled and was now sticking out in twenty distinct directions. Combined with how snappy he was when Brad came to--Tuukka’s tone towards you was a function of how much of your ailment was your own fault and how much you made him work to save your ass--and Brad felt a little bad.
Brad’s eyes snatched on the empty chair beside the bed again--the second thing Brad noticed upon his return to the land of the living after the blinding light Tuukka shone in his eyes--thought it made sense.
None of the crew except the captain would be allowed in the medbay this late as visitors and the captain of a spaceship--and especially one that just survived a hostile encounter--could hardly be expected to keep vigil at a bedside, just because they fucked and Brad did so every time their roles were reversed.
And the last time Bergy did something exceptionally brave and exceptionally dangerous--Brad was livid. He thought Bergy wasn’t going to make it and when he came to, Brad had asked him, all but shouting, why it was so difficult for him to understand how important he was.
“To the ship?” Bergy asked, his beautiful brown eyes still a little hazy. There were procedures in place. He had no doubt Brad would make a fine captain until they reached the next outpost if circumstances called for it.
Brad was the kind of guy who hid very little of what he thought and what he felt and even so it took him everything he had to tell the truth then. But he just thought that if he did, maybe then he would get Bergy to see. That maybe it would be enough. That maybe he could be enough.
To me. Why is it so difficult for you to understand how important you are to me?
Bergy looked at him for a moment, and then reminded Brad carefully, diplomatically, that none of them came before the Federation or their mission.
And that had been that.
Yeah.
So there was no reason for Bergy to be at his side when Brad was the one who saved the day and almost but not quite got himself killed in the process.
“Just so you know,” Tuukka said. Somewhere in there he had sat down in the chair. He sounded exhausted. “I will schedule both of your routine physicals to 6am for the next two years and call you in for a consult at 6am on the days you don’t have them.”
“I wasn’t two people last time I checked.”
Tuukka ran a hand through his face. “And we thank the Gods every day for that. I meant you and our dear captain who thinks he will die if he takes medical advice for once and who also thought he was above human constraints such as sleep or food and to no one’s surprise fainted on me.”
He gestured without looking at the next bed over. Brad’s head snapped to his right and--
Fuck.
It took everything he had not to try and sit up.
Bergy was lying in the next bed over, unconscious, an IV line snaking down to his hand.
“Is he--?”
“He is fine,” Tuukka said. “Like I said he just tried to stay up for 36 hours, only nibbled on the food we brought him and then passed out. I gave him a light sedative because it’s the only way to get him to rest.”
Brad exhaled before his chest sank with dread.
“Was it because the ship got hit?”
Did the ship get hit? Brad thought the Uzayi didn’t have enough firepower to cause structural damage to their ship--not after the intervention he pulled anyway--but if Bergy had to stay up for that long--there was no way he did that of his own volition--Bergy who loved his sleep.
“You made sure it didn’t. It took him two hours to get everything back under control and get everyone settled.”
Thank Gods. But then. If he was fine and if the ship was fine--what about the rest of the time?
Tuukka huffed out a rather bitter laugh.
Before he could say anything “rest of the time,” came a very drowsy voice from the next bed over, drawling even as it tried to enunciate each word. “I was asking you--”
Bergy was smiling when Brad turned his head, though his eyes were still closed. “--to stay.”
He cracked an eye open and looked at Brad.
“You look like shit,” Brad told him. And he really did between the mess of a hair, bloodshot eyes and two days worth of stubble. A better man would feel more guilt and less warmth.
Bergy told him to be a little more selfish the next time.
