Hawaii’s Kilauea: Explosive eruption at volcano

An explosive eruption at Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has sent ash 30,000ft (9,100m) into the sky.

The eruption took place at 04:15 local time (14:15 GMT) on Thursday, and scientists say further action is likely in the near future.

Staff at the volcano observatory and the national park had been evacuated.

Around 4:15am this morning Hawai’i local time (approx 7:15am Pacific) there was a massive eruption at Kilauea, with a plume going about 30,000 ft into the air.  This link goes to the latest images and video from the site.

Ashfall is heavy and primarily to the southeast.  There have been several quakes in the 4.x intensity.
