I wanted to publish a personal artbook but I have no experience with it at all! Any tips?

Nattosoup:  Start with a small, easy to print ashcan sketch collection.  Here’s an example of my 2015 ashcan, Artistically Challenged.  It was designed in Photoshop, and laid out in InDesign.  Here’s a presentation from Heidi and I on how to do that.  And here’s a blogpost on how we assembled the Friendly Book of Monsters.  

Do that for a couple years to get a feel for whether or not your audience even wants an artbook from you.  Most publishers want a minimum limit of at least 100 books ordered at a time, and if your audience doesn’t want to buy a published artbook from you, that’s a lot of money, and a lot of dead stock.  Once your audience starts to ask for an artbook regularly, or once your ashcans start selling out for a few years, then consider doing an artbook.When you are ready to put together an artbook, we have some posts in our archive that can help get you started.

@kiriska​ Echoing Becca on testing the waters with a smaller zine/sketch collection VS a full on artbook. If you’re like me and dislike putting together cheap, small books yourself, you can get relatively affordable short-run zines from RA Comics Direct or Short Run. I’ve only used the former, but they have decent paper stock options, a low minimum order (25), and are crazy fast on turnaround.
