Hey all! Penlab is an absolutely fantastic community resource ensuring Filipino comics are accessible online, with a plethora of titles from different Filipino creatives, and it NEEDS YOUR HELP to stay online!

TORONTO! ARE YOU HUNGRY FOR ASIAN COMICS?
Tonight, March 10th, from 18:00-21:00, SKETCH Working Arts is hosting a fab art show with the Cup Doodle Comic Workshop + Residency Project.
For 9 weeks, a group of Asian cartoonists have been working away on their comic zines on topics such the immigrant experience, growing up in isolated small towns, the complexities of family ties, the intertwined relationship of food and love, living the fat life, sleep paralysis mythologies and so much more. We’ll be tabling with our comics along with a plethora of other rad art projects! Come out and hang!

Asian Comics dispels the myth that, outside of Japan, the continent is nearly devoid of comic strips and comic books. Relying on his fifty years of Asian mass communication and comic art research, during which he traveled to Asia at least seventy-eight times and visited many studios and workplaces, John A. Lent shows that nearly every country had a golden age of cartooning and has experienced a recent rejuvenation of the art form. As only Japanese comics output has received close and by now voluminous scrutiny, Asian Comics tells the story of the major comics creators outside of Japan.
So many people draw their creative inspiration through these comics, in some cases, they try to re-draw the characters they like, make a short comic using the same character but with a different genre, dress up like the character or simply just being inspired by the character.
You can also view these comics in numerous sites or apps, but unfortunately some of them don’t update new chapters as quick as others. It’s so great that those sites and apps have translators and editors so that people can understand the story and enjoy them without any drastic changes, that’s why these guys put pages in the comics they translate to ask for help,

It’s been a week since our magical and action-packed show at SKETCH Studios but recalling all the good times with the Cup Doodle crew still keeps us warm! We’re going to miss the warm, supportive comic-sessions on Wednesday nights at 180 Shaw. ASIAN COMICS ROCK!
