FLAG NEWS: Ongoing Transition
On the 7th of December, 2024, the government of Syria was overthrown by revolutionaries, putting an end to the Assad regime and, hopefully, the civil war. A transitional government was put in place, alongside a de facto flag change.
Flag of Syria from 1980-2024: Flag of Syria from 2024-present:
Both flags use the Pan-Arab colours, with red, white, black and green each representing a historical Islamic Caliphate. The old flag originated from a time when Egypt and Syria were united. It is based on the flag of Egypt, with two green stars added for the two nations. Syria kept this flag even after the union dissolved.
The new flag is actually the older of the two, with the design dating to the First Syrian Republic, founded in 1930. The flag was adopted upon Syria's independence from France, and is therefore associated with freedom by the opposition, who repurposed it for the revolution.
