I really hope Violet will be Sophie and Benedict’s firstborn. They’ve already changed the genders of Daphne and Simon’s, as well as Penelope and Colin’s, firstborns for plot reasons. Just like Simon, who deliberately didn’t want to continue his lineage because of his father, it would make thematic sense for Sophie to have a daughter—symbolizing that she’s no longer afraid her child will suffer the same fate she did.
Yes, yes, yes. I fully agree and I see a lot of the fandom has this same thought! I kinda went on a ramble so please enjoy this analysis of Sophie and Violet II I do love my baby Charles, but the significance of Sophie having a daughter is so important to her character. This quote has always stays with me:
"If I have a child," she said, her voice starting to crack, "do you know how much I would love it? More than life, more than breath, more than anything. How could I hurt my own child the way I've been hurt? How could I subject her to the same kind of pain?"
When Sophie is saying this to Benedict she refers to her theoretical child as Her. A daughter. She has been unloved and lonely her entire life and no one was there for her as a little girl. Sophie hopes to give her daughter a life so unlike her own; one that is full of love and happiness. One that doesn't make her daughter ashamed of her existence. Sophie speaks:
"They say that a smart person learns from her mistakes...But a truly smart person learns from other people's mistakes." She pulled away, then turned to face him. "I'd like to think I'm a truly smart person. Please don't take that away from me."
And that's why Sophie refuses Benedict's offer— Sophie will not be her mother, and her daughter will not be her. Violet II represents all of that to Sophie. She is a way for Sophie to grieve the life she wish she had, but also heals her for not repeating history she's tried so hard to avoid.
In addition, I think it's time we finally have a granddaughter in the family— yes, we have Belinda but the odds of seeing her are low as Saphne has been filtered out of the show. She's also named after the matriarch of the family; Violet plays a significant role in Benedict and Sophie's love story so having Violet II be their first born can be a satisfying reward at the end of the season. If she is born first then I assume Violet II may be the one that is sick in s5 (if Eloise is next AND if they choose to include that storyline). This can also continue Sophie's feelings about motherhood and family as she's fought so hard to get this life, only for it to be potentially taken away from her.
So in conclusion. I love Sophie. I love Violet II. I hope she's born first bc it's important!
