yuzuru hanyu - most unforgettable moment in the sport
I was raised in Korea for my younger years and that has led me to be the biggest fan of Kim Yuna. When I moved to Canada, the World Championships that year was held in province and my mom and I drove out to watch the Ladies Free Skate live.
The entire event is the most unforgettable moment in fs for me but if I had to break it down into one “moment” it would definitely be Yuna’s Les Misérables. Seeing that final Y-spin was breathtaking and the coolest thing ever. Les Misérables remains my favourite Yuna program thanks to that memory :)
alina zagitova - favourite warhorse
Oof, this is kinda hard.
If Moulin Rouge is a warhorse then it’s definitely my favourite. Kudos to V/M and Kazuki Tomono for endearing the music to me forever! (I wish One Day I’ll Fly Away programs were a bit more creative though...it seems it’s just a standard ‘ballad’ program now.)
More classical warhorses would probably be RnJ (Junhwan’s FS tops my list, Yuzu’s and Young’s are podiumers) and Vivaldi (if that’s a warhorse). The thing with Vivaldi is that as someone who listens to classical music often, I know it’s overplayed but I still love the Four Seasons. It’s less about the programs and more about the pieces lol—although Shoma’s Winter was killer.
yulia lipinskaya - favourite/least favourite spin position
I love hair cutters. They’re just so aesthetically pleasing. Layback spins in general are really nice. Honourable mentions to broken leg sit spins, that first spin that the Shibs did in their Paradise FS, and flying entrance camel spins. I used to love illusion spins when I was little but now it’s hard to find good ones so my opinion has lessened.
Least favourite is the Biellmann. I’m not a fan of hyperextended anything and so little people that can’t hyperextend do good Biellmanns. The foot is rarely over the axis in spinners. Controversial but I don’t like Yuzu’s Biellmann for that reason. I also don’t like half-Biellmanns that are so often done in men’s skating because EVERYONE. SLOWS. DOWN. during that spin!!!! It’s so painfully slow and just pulls you out of a well-done program.
