Hiya! this is an old friend of yours ! We knew each other back in the fanfiction days and talked about fun resi stuff and IDK what name I was going by back then but I wrote in the big blind and was in college then LOL! That was a long time ago but I happened upon your blog and went Holy Shit. I wanted to reconnect and see how you've been!
Uhhhh... hi?!?!?! LOL Sadly I have the memory of a goldfish, and the RE fic days were so long ago, omg what even is time!??! So with that being said, is there anything more specific you can tell me about how we were acquainted? Gods, that probably sounds awful; not trying to come off some type of way -- just a bit awkward is all. But yeah, I'm all for reconnecting... just gotta remember who you are! 😅
Talk a bit about your experiences with KOF. When you first played it, how you improved, how you got attached to the characters and decided you wanted to write about them, fun facts.
Hmmm… I remember reading about Fatal Fury 2 and KOF ‘94 in some old gaming mags, but had never even SEEN a Neo Geo machine… until they built a Super Walmart in my town. For some reason there were two arcade cabinets there, I don’t remember what the other one was, but the Neo Geo one had four games on it: KOF ‘94, Samurai Shodown 2, Art of Fighting 2, and another one that escapes me. History was made in that goddamn Walmart. I played every chance I got (my parents went to Walmart a lot okay.) I liked KOF ‘94 so much that I started saving up money for MONTHS to buy a Neo Geo CD. I had to buy used, so I made my dad drive me about two hours (?) away from home to go get the thing, which came with KOF ‘94, Samurai Shodown 2, Art of Fighting 2, and Hoop Dreams, which I never touched (LOL). Like… I knew the Blood and Bounce code before I even had an NGCD. That’s how into this shit I was. I got KOF ‘95 shortly after getting the console, and I just grinded. I would come home from school and play for hours. I got a perfect with King in five seconds flat on the hardest difficulty setting against the CPU once; I got to the point where I could take on and even beat grown men. Also, I fell in love with the Women Fighters Team literally immediately. I was a teeny bit familiar with Mai when she was introduced in Fatal Fury 2 (Electronic Gaming Monthly would write about it semi-regularly), but King (heart eyes, motherfucker) and Yuri were all-new to me. I don’t know when I decided that I wanted to write these characters (I was writing short stories about the Final Fantasy VI crew for a minute), but I started with really shitty fan comics (I was huge into drawing and anime back in those days) but I’m pretty sure I gave myself arthritis so I stopped. But, I could still write, so, like… I did. I came up with the first draft for Much Like Suffocating sometime after KOF ‘98 (?) came out but shelved it for many, many years because it disturbed me so much. But I just kept coming back to it, and the characters – particularly the Women Fighters Team.tl; dr KOF ‘94 changed my life.
