Hey, Xia. If you had a fic with the soulmate identification trope for TRC and YoI respectively, how would you play it? Would we use marks or words or colours? Music or dreams? I'm interested to hear how you would use the trope, or even if you could use it differently for each character in TRC seeing as they all come from different worlds (and in theory could have entirely different if compatible tropes at play).
I never had soulmate identification ideas for trc. However my unfinished “Have Mercy” olymfic uses the soulmates and reincarnation trope I’m so fond of. (Yes when au kurogane made his dying wish to be with au fai again someday, they are reborn as Fai and Kurogane we know…from diff worlds)
I’m not an immediate fan of soulmates identification tropes because the characters feel forced to be in love with their soulmates when they find out who it is. Whereas if they fall in love not knowing they are marked soulmates, I love it!
So I had a neat idea for yoi. The moment your soulmate falls in love with you, you are then able to see colors.
The gist: Victor falls for Yuuri at the banquet, Yuuri wakes up the next morning with a bad hangover…and is shocked to see his room with vivid colors. So he has no idea who his soulmate is supposed to be, and of course would not immediately think his idol is…
Victor doesn’t see color right away that same night. I make it like this because while I do see Yuuri having a celebrity crush on him for YEARS it isn’t falling in love with Victor the person. He still follows his heart to move to Japan (and of course wants to coach because WOW YUURI IS AMAZING WITH SKILLS ON THE ICE HE HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL I WANT TO HELP HIM OUT). When he arrives and bombards Yuuri with questions about his love life, he asks “do you see colors!!!” Yuuri declines to comment, and his heart shatters for a few days.
He still is hopelessly in love and falls deeper in love for Yuuri even though he hasn’t seen colors. Not until summertime. He sees it when they have fun at the beach and he’s so so happy. He still doesn’t get how it took longer but it doesn’t matter. Yuuri is his soulmate. Yet Yuuri and he has some steps to go.
Yuuri realizes he’s fallen for Victor as a person over the summer. And he’s in agony because Victor is still not guaranteed his soulmate (oh if only the boys ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT THE BANQUET. OR YUURI SAYS HE HAS SEEN COLOR SINCE DECEMBER). But he fights his mind and his anxiety and he gets together with Victor. Even proposes to him in Barcelona, because deep down he feels happiest with Victor, and to heck with soulmates.
Once Victor, Chris, and Yurio brings up Sochi banquet, and Victor confesses in private that that was the night he had fallen for Yuuri, it clicks to him that, oh yes, he has seen color since post banquet because of Victor’s feelings. Silly boys.
