     For a moment, Ree was speechless. She’d never considered that secrets were like zombies, but it made a certain amount of sense. Secrets never did die. And some would simply fester and rot—also much like a zombie. That was a visual she’d rather not think of, so she swiftly shook her head clear and managed a faint smile.

Guy made a really good point. 

    “You know… I never thought of it like that before, but yeah. Though I’ve heard you can kill a zombie with a headshot. The same doesn’t apply to secrets though, I suspect.” A pause. “What are you on about secrets anyway? You looking to share a few?”

     Oh, she understood what fighting for injustice was like. She’d done--still did it, when it struck her. For all her efforts, however, it had ended in punishment and exile. Sometimes, the fight just wasn’t worth it.

     But this guy... he had the zeal, the drive she remembered from back in her early days--only, obviously, multiplied by a greater number than Ree cared to calculate right now.

     “Uh, right,” she said, hand on her hip, eyes rolling away from his direction. “That’s all well and good, but no need to get a hard-on about it.”

    She blinked a couple of times, her dark eyes adjusting to the semi-darkness and to him, the guy she somehow kept encountering when she least expected it. Faint annoyance crossed her face before she sighed and hefted a shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. 

     “I was wondering the same thing,” Ree admitted, turning her head slightly so her blonde braid fell down her back. “I’m starting to think you’re following me.”

     A little murderous? Quite murderous, she thought. The Defiler--demon, Ree reminded herself--was dead at their feet. Four blows had been effective to end its life. The woman must be quite strong. For a second, she wondered if she was a witch, able of great feats of strength like this one a regular basis. She dismissed that thought, though. She hadn’t yet found many witches on Earth, at least not the ones she’d grown to know and understand from Scintil. 

     She could be a demon, however. She’d come across those far more often in the few months she’d been in this world. 

      But, Ree supposed it didn’t matter at the moment. She’d have to hold back on the questions.

      “It started it,” she said. “It seems only right that you finished it. and you came out of it okay.” She brushed her braid across her shoulder and tucked her hands into her leather jacket. She couldn’t do it, she realized. She had to ask. “Why did it start it?”

      Well, so much for curbing her curiosity.

     “Hmm?” Ree didn’t glance up from the book before her. Earth history was quite a fascinating subject, when she found the time to devote to reading for once. It was hard to tear herself away from the page, but she did, marking her page and the line she left off with a finger. 

     “Wallet?” Her dark eyes looked him over, falling onto the wallet he held in hand. “No. I don’t have a wallet. Doesn’t it have a driver’s license or an ID or something? That could be a clue.”

     From her perspective, he was quite awful with sums indeed. How else would he have ended up outnumbered and overwhelmed? It was a miscalculation that could’ve ended in his death. A big risk, one he probably should’ve thought of. 

      But he’d get no lecture from her. She wasn’t that invested.

      “I’ll agree to that.” As she cleaned the blood from her knife against her black jeans, she took a last look around. “I suppose you were lucky I showed up to even the odds a bit.” Her dark eyes shot back to him. “You good?”

     For a split second, confusion crossed her face. It was true that she carried the majority of her arsenal in the many pockets of her long coat and that without it, she was less armed than usual. Entirely her fault, of course, leaving it draped across the back of the chair when the creature had appeared and attacked from literally nowhere. Coatless, in jeans and a tank, she pursued. She’d tailed the demon, but it had given her the slip. She’d find it though and she would take it out. After all, her powers gave her the edge, when her weapons could not.

     But there was no way this woman could know all that. This ‘death wish’ she referred to had to be something else.

      Ah, yes. The chill in the air. Ree noticed it now, as the biting wind whipped loose strands of hair into her eyes. Impatiently, and with a mild smile on her face, she brushed them away with the back of her hand. “What, this? This is nothing.” She shrugged her bare shoulders, slipping her fingers into her belt loops, where her sheathed daggers were clearly secured against her hips. “I run hot.”

Ree said nothing for a time, so focused on the food in front of her. The ratio of cheese to chip was close to perfect this time (way more cheese than necessary) and she intended to enjoy every bite. That meant not speaking until she'd sated her immediate hunger.

She drew back finally, wiping her mouth with the paper napkin. Her brow furrowed as if she hadn't been considering that question all the while.

"Are we strangers?" she asked. "I don't think teaming up to take out one of those—what was it called?" Ree wasn't sure she'd even asked. It wasn't a detail she had to know in the moment. And she hadn't paid much attention to what was on the news, but she had seen the robotic giants flash on the television. Their name eluded her. "That thing, whatever—I think defeating it together makes us colleagues, at the very least."

But to overshare, there had to be a sharing first. Ree considered it.

"Sure. We can overshare. Go for it."
