Update on ask Healthy Light

Am relaying this for @ask-healthy-light at their request that they have hit their post limit and due to this there wont be an episode tomorrow.

The Praetorian Guard, the elite body guards of the Caesars and Agustus of Rome. Created by Princeps Augustus Caesar, the Praetorian Guard were supposed to be the loyal guards of the Imperator, ready to protect him from all threats. However, over time, they got too involved in Roman politics and palace intriuge. Delusioned by the power they possed, their officers eventually became corrupt and, in many cases, ended up killing the Caesars they were supposed to protect, before raising into Imperial power the man they desired. If this appointed man chose to go against their interests, then the Praetorians would assasinate him too and repeat the process. At one point, the Praetorians even sold the position of Imperator to the highest bidder.

Eventually, Imperator Constantine the Great would abolish the Praetorians as a guard unit, with its remnants being sent to the frontiers. He would replace them with the much more trustworthy Palatini, "Palace Troops".

Battle of Gettysburg - Day 3

July 3

3:30 PM

The High-Water Mark of the Confederacy

The brigade commander stood in front of the regiment, urging the troops to follow. Sword extended, black hat atop it, he pushed his way through the mass of stalled Confederate troops and rushed towards the wall. With that, the 14th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, colors leading, followed him.

At around 3:30 in the afternoon, as Union troops desperately through reinforcements to their line at Cemetery Ridge, the troops of Garnett's Confederate Brigade began rushing forward to a piece of wall known as the Angle. Here, Union troops were thin and most vulnerable.

Covering that portion of the wall was the 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment and they were outnumbered. A whole enemy brigade was advancing directly at them. Trying to support them, Cushing's Battery fired canister agaisnt the advancing Confederates. But they did not stop. With a wall of wild shouting troops quickly approaching them, the 71st Pennsylvania broke and ran.

With that, the troops of Garnett's Confederate Brigade took a portion of the wall. For a moment, the Confederates felt triumphant. However, it was short lived. Looking to their flanks, they saw other Union regiments still held the wall. Then, looking ahead them, they saw new Union regiments approaching them. Forming up, the reinforcing Union regiments fired a solid volley. The Confederates tried to fired back, but it wasn't as effective. The various regiments of Garnett's Confederate Brigade was more of a mob at that point, with few senior officers left to command them, as Garnett himself had already fallen. Because of this, the brigade fell back.

However, following this momentary capture of the wall, a second attempt was made.

Armistead's Confederate Brigade soon rushed forward, with Armistead himseld leading from the fron, black hat atop his sword - a rally point for his troops to follow. Aiming for the Angle, they charged and continued to advance, despite the murderous fire from different fronts.

"Come on, boys, give them the cold steel! Who will follow me?" Armistead shouted, as he reached the wall and stepped over it. His brigade followed him, as regiments from Archer's Confederate Brigade joined them at the Angle.

Facing Armistead's Confederate Brigade was the 69th Pennsylvania - Irish troops. However, they were soon joined by the 72nd Pennsylvania, who formed a line to block the further advance of Armistead's Confederate Brigade.

This was the high-water mark of the Confederate forces. They could not advance further than that.

At close range, the 69th and 72nd Pennsylvania fired volleys against Armistead's Brigade. There were only a few Confederate troops at the angle and many of them were disorganized, as various regiments mixed among one another. If they had reinfocements, they could possibly push further and break through the two Union regiments blocking them. However, the only reinforcements they were getting were a trickle of troops, coming one by one, trying to join the group of Confederates that managed to reach the wall.

As the Confederate assault stalled once more, Union forces began to slowly encompas and outflank them. But the situation was chaos for both sides. At one point Armistead was shot, mortally wounded. Meanwhile, his close friend, General Hancock, commander of the Union II Corps that was defending Cemetery Ridge, was also shot.

However, despite the chaos on both sides, it was the Confederate forces that slowly started to buckle under pressure. During that crucial moment, the troops of the 72nd Pennsylvania charged Armisted's Confederate and engaged them in a melee. This was the final straw, as Confederate troops at the Angle either retreated or surrenderd.

Other Union regiments began to charge Confederate forcesc at this front, forcing their enemy to either retreat or surrender. The time was 4:00 in the afternoon. Eventually, Confederate troops that attacked Cemetery Ridge either fell back to their lines or surrendered to Union troops. It was over, the attack had failed.

The Union center held and Lee's last attempt to break the Union forces at Gettysburg resulted in defeat.

The Union had won the battle.

The next day, July 4, both sides licked their wounds and remained in their positions. No major fighting occured that day. In the evening the Army of Northern Virginia began their retreat back to Virginia, leaving the Army of the Potomac masters of the field.

However, despite this victory, the American Civil War would continue to rage for almost two more years.

D-Day

June 6, 1944

They took cover behind the Sherman DD tank, as the snap of a bullet landed nearby. German snipers hid in the various houses along their line of advance, but they must root them out in order to push towards their objective. Progress was slow, however, as both sniper fire and mortar fire made the march toward the enemy batteries difficult and dangerous.

The British Army's No. 4 Commando was assigned to capture a battery of six 15.5 cm coastal guns located pass the town of Ouistreham. These guns could threaten the left flank of the landings at Sword Beach and thus needed to be eliminated. To help accomplish their task No. 4 Commando had two Troops of French Commandos attached to them

Landing with the second at Sword Beach at 0820, No. 4 Commando then made their way towards Ouistreham, with the French Commandos leading, while the British Commandos followed close behind.

The force met no resistance upon entering the town, but soon found a German strongpoint at a position known as the "Casino". The initial French Commando assault on this position was driven back, but soon Duplex Drive (DD) Sherman tanks from the 13th/18th Royal Hussars Regiment arrived and blasted the enemy positions. Eventually western portion of Ouistreham was secured by the French Commandos, clearing the way for the British Commandos to make the assault against the batteries.

However, snipers and mortar fire made the advance through the town difficult, as the troops of No. 4 Commando took cover behind the tanks. Eventually, the Commandos reach the perimeter of the German battery and made their assault, with the support of the Sherman DDs of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars.

Once the position was captured, the Commandos were shocked to find the there were no coastal guns there. Instead, telephone poles laid down to look like gusn were in their place. Apparently, the real guns had been previously moved back inland three days prior.

With the battery position captured, No. 4 Commando soon marched on to join its parent unit, the 1st Special Service Brigade. They would end the day occupying positions on some high ground east of the Orne river.

@ask-healthy-light and @asktwilighteclipse as members of No. 4 Commando. Healthy Light is armed with a Lee-Enflield No. 4 rifle, while Solar has a Vickers K machine gun, with drum ammo packs. The Vickers K were provided to Commando units in order to increase their firepower. It should also be noted that they are wearing bordie helmets instead of the usual berets, as Commandos during D-Day were given the option to wear helmets that provided them better protection. Behind them is a Sherman Duplex Drive (DD) tank, with its inflatable floatation screen down. The DD tanks were among many specialized vehicles made for D-Day. Thanks to the floatation screen the Sherman tanks were able to float themselves ashore and support the first wave that would land in the beaches.

Depicted in this piece are members of the 3rd Marine Brigade (3MBde) during Operation Dominance. The operation itself was part of a bigger conflict, which was the 2000 Mindanao All Out War. During that time, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, with the Marine Corps at the lead, launched a campaign to root out the growing seperatist insurgents in Mindanao by securing territory and hunting and destroying their training camps.

In Operation Dominance, elements of the 3MBde were tasked with clearing the Narciso Ramos Highway. However, the very moment the operation began on April 29, 2000, the marines encountered heavy resistance from insurgent forces, thus pinning them down. Because of this the day was mostly composed of intense firefights between the marines and their enemy, as close air support and mortar fire tried to soften the enemy bunkers and trenches.

The next day the marines of the 3MBde made an assault against the enemy positions, but met stiff resistance. Fighting in the area would prove to be hard and it would take days of heavy ground fighting and relentless close air support before the marines were able to secure the area.

All are depicting marines of the 3rd MBde dressed in the stardard jungle cammo used at the time. They also wear the World War 2 era M1 Helmets, with jungle cammo, which was the common helmet used at the time. The Marine Corps was actually switching to newer PASGT Kevlar Helmets at the time, but, due to production issues, less than 500 had arrived by the start of the campaign. Because of this, all Marine Battlion Landing Teams, except for MBLT-7, would use the old M1 helmet until the end of the conflict.
