movie night
The popcorn bowl had been set on the coffee table a few minutes earlier, after the second time kernels had been flung into the air. Two already empty beer bottles were beside it, two additional ones of varying amounts still there as well. He didn’t notice the slight weight on his shoulder at first, as he was still awake and watching the film intently; it’d been a while since he’d seen it, after all.
It was when he heard a quiet sigh that he glanced over, suddenly realizing how close she was to him. Her head rested on his shoulder, and as he watched, she nuzzled him lightly, shifting in her seat. He blinked at first, damning the warmth in his face, and turned back to the movie, leaning forward enough to get another handful of popcorn, but not moving her from her spot. Not that it mattered, as she snuggled closer when he sat back again. Whether by instinct or not, his free arm went over the back of the couch, hand resting lightly on her shoulder.
More than halfway through the movie. The kids were in the hospital, and he knew what was about to happen. Rolling his eyes, he went to get another bit of popcorn when she stirred again, and he froze. This time though, it was only to turn her face out a bit, her cheek resting on his shoulder, as she let out a soft sigh.
She looked…cute.
Reaching over, he cradled her cheek in his hand, leaning down to drop a soft kiss on her lips. It was only when he drew back – slowly – that he realized what he’d done, felt his face warm up even more, and he turned back to the movie, grateful that the action had started up again. Distraction. Just what he needed.
The last thing he’d expected during the bloody scene was a drowsy giggle in his ear.
“Did you…seriously try to steal a kiss…during this movie?” she asked, her voice breathy, evident that she’d just woken up again. He chuckled, hoping the lights were still dimmed enough for her not to notice his blush.
Not that it mattered. The couch shifted as she sat up, a hand running along his cheek, turning his face to hers. A soft smile, and then her lips pressed against his, her kiss just as gentle as his had been. A playful nip at his lip before she drew back, and she slid her arm across his chest, head returning to his shoulder as she snuggled into him. “Wake me…when it’s over…?”
“Sure.” Motherfuckin’ blushing.
His arm went back around her shoulders, holding her close, thumb running lightly along the sleeve of her nightshirt as he rested his cheek atop her head, watching the carnage on the television screen.
