What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂
if an archaeologist says an artifact was probably for “ritual purposes” it means “i have no fuckin clue”
but if they say it was for “fertility rituals” they mean “i know exactly what it was for but i dont want to say ‘ancient dildo’”
Back in the day I worked at a certain very famous and very high caste art museum in the US as a junior curator. Part of my job was to catalog the objects in the museum database. This includes details like provenance, measurements, and a visual description of what the object looked like.
Like I said, the museum was a pretty snotty institution. It’s got a LOT of objects it’s way famous for possessing, but nobody knew about the absolutely massive collection of Moche erotic pottery it had because the curators were totally embarrassed by this stuff.
Some examples:
Pretty hot shit, right? They never, ever put any of this stuff on public view or published it in any catalogues but - we legit had like several hundred pieces of Moche ceramics in the “dirty pots” category. Anyway, I was left alone to just do my job with regard to the database for several years, ok? And I figured, well, these’re accessioned objects in the museum’s collection - better get down to bidness.
I catalogued every goddamn bestiality, necrophiliac, cocksucking, buttfucking, detached penis, and giant vulva drinking cup in that collection. I’d be like,
A drinking vessel in form of a standing man wearing a tunic and cap. He holds an oversized erection in his hands and stares into the distance (note I did not say “like he’s hella-constipated”). The vessel has a hole at both the tip of the penis as well as around the rim of the figure’s head, thus forcing the drinker to drink only from the penis or risk spilling wine all over themselves from the top of the vessel. Red and orange slip covers the surface of the piece.
Pretty straightforward, right? Apparently the deep seated fear of these objects that the curators exhibited was meant to spread to me as well, but - no one ever gave me that memo, because I guess Midwesterners reproduce asexually. When the curators understood that I had catalogued all of these objects in addition to the other, non-sexy pieces in the collection, they were apparently livid, but knew they had no legs to stand on in terms of getting pissed at me for it.
I visited the museum’s online public access database a few years back and - every single description I wrote of these pieces has been totally neutered to say something like Male figural vase.
Long story short? Just call a dildo a fucking dildo. It’s all gonna be ok, I swear.
This is absolutely the MOST unusual reblog I have ever tagged with what is probably my second-favorite tag, “talk to me about your work.”
Plus it’s hilarious.

Museums should have sections dedicated to artifacts like these with a warning that says “There’s a lot of private parts in here but we’re dedicated to displaying history so we won’t censor these. Enter at your own risk” or something. It’s prudish to deliberately hide history because of some ding dongs.
Fucking Puritanism.
Unpopular opinion: Sex exists. Making body parts taboo is both psychologically bad for us and kinda stupid.

5: a character that fidgets
Reeve fidgets much more than you'd expect - quite a lot of it comes out in Cait Sith's feline mannerisms. If he's at his desk, he'll be twirling a pen in his fingers or tapping it against a notepad, and he does have a little fidget cube to roll around when he's deep in thought (yes, it's painted in Cait's colors). He was also gifted a squishy ball in a Cait Sith design by Tseng during an office-wide Secret Santa exchange, and it's what he holds on to when he checks in on AVALANCHE.
The meetings can be hell on his nerves, especially once Cait Sith's integrated himself into the crew, so he'll be idly twiddling his thumbs at times while listening to any of the other CEOs drone on. It's been called out more than once by Scarlet and Heidegger, so Reeve tries to keep it to himself... which ends up turning into restless leg bouncing, but at least that doesn't seem to bother anyone as much.
Or if it does, they haven't said anything to him.
10: a writer who influenced your writing
Probably one of my biggest writing influences and inspirations is Stephen King (though I hope I'm better with endings!). I've been reading his work since before I probably should've been, both fiction and nonfiction.
15: a word a character loves to use
'Sweetheart;' it's a term of endearment that Reilena heard from her parents many many times (Alexis and Mayako adored each other, and their daughter), and one that she's kept dear to her heart. As such, Vincent's become her sweetheart, and a surefire way to get him flustered and perhaps turn a bit pink, is for her to call him that.

1: a habit you love to give a character
Playing with hair! Whether it's being good with hairstyles, dying their hair, or toying with it as a habit. Blame it on me having long hair myself lol, but you can actually tell quite a bit about someone when it comes down to something like fidgeting with hair.
2: a mannerism that accidentally slipped in that you've now stuck to
While writing the Casino AU, there wasn't going to be a specific VIP room that Vincent would take Reilena to during their secret dates. The Seventh Heaven has a few, all flower-themed, and they were going to switch between them to try and keep from being tailed.
But the Scarlet Lotus fell into becoming their go-to room for trysts (save for the one time it was taken by another couple, and so they went to the Amaryllis Lounge instead~), and as such, when Tifa gets the heads-up that Reilena's the escort for the evening's Shinra visitor, she makes sure that it's left unoccupied so the couple can steal away for a few minutes.
(probably not what the question was implying, but oh well!)
14: a scar, freckle or hairstyle
Reilena gets her hair from her father, Alexis. Originally from Icicle Inn, he had deep auburn hair that fell to mid-back in length, and was usually worn in a half-ponytail - similar to Tseng's hairstyle - though Alexis would also pull it up into a higher half-pony as well.
23: a piece of canon you love to emphasise
Aerith and Tifa's friendship/relationship. No matter what I write, they will ALWAYS be good friends at the very least (and girlfriends if I can work it in there~). I hate the ship wars, I hate the LTD, and for god's sake, the Recontinuity practically ships Aerti. Even if you don't see anything romantic between them, it's tough to deny that there isn't a close friendship there.

There's an island in the kitchen of the cabin that Vincent and Reilena live in, post-canon, that I will usually bring up at least once in those fics. It has been through quite a bit (playful chases, a place for Ardis* to leap up and get his parents' attention, and some rather adult 💕moments💕), and it's a way to let the kitchen get some special mention, as it plays into a headcanon of mine that Vincent is rather good when it comes to baking~

A surefire way to tell if Reilena's anxious about something is when she starts rolling her Materia pendant in her hand. The rolling motion soothes her, and gives her something to focus on while she tries to make sense of her thoughts and emotions. There have been times when she dissociates enough that one of the others in the group have had to snap her out of it, before she gets too lost in thought.
15: a word a character loves to use
Vincent tends to say "fret" instead of "worry" more often than not, though he's starting to get better about using both terms. His use of "fret" comes from his youth, when he'd sometimes overhear his parents use it while discussing Grimoire's line of work. Nowadays he'll get teased by the younger members of the group (usually Yuffie) that he's starting to sound like an old man - which is met with an exaggerated eyeroll when he replies "And? I am an 'old man,'" complete with finger quotes.
