Wait I thought in the previous chapters it talked about how he became mysteriously mayor? Did this go back in time?

Yep! Hugo mentions that Fauchelevant's accident happened in a time before everyone unanimously agreed that Madeleine was the greatest person that ever lived, so Fauchelevant was part of the small contingent of people that still hated Madeleine (before he became Monsieur Le Maire)

and it's not just implied either, VH says so in the beginning of the next chapter after the accident

I just wanna say, I’m super grateful for your play by play of the Brick, because I tried SO hard to read it for years and years, but my terrible mental health prevented me from being able to focus on it for longer than a few minutes at a time. (I did manage to get through the first book, meaning Fantine). So anyway, thanks so much, cause I really want to know every aspect of the original book, but I didn’t have a patience to actually get through it.

Aw you're welcome! I've been writing under the assumption that people had read it, I didn't think recapping the chapters is also helpful for people who didn't read it too! Duh!

Personally, I read the brick super fast the first time when I was going through a terrible mental/emotional health place. In the end I was reading about 20/30 chapters a day more or less as a coping mechanism - I'm good now btw! It was just a temporary bad place - and I missed a lot of the details. Like a lot. This recap is as much for me as anyone else.

I'm not gonna be able to replace the experience of reading this giant brick but I'm glad to be your mediator! And if you have questions about anything in the book I'll be glad to answer them too
