Were the Ancient Ones able to wield magic, and did they fall into one of the three types of people?

A good question with a disappointing answer: no one knows!

But there are some interesting theories proposed by World Athenaeum researchers, based upon ancient artifacts they've studied. The Ancient Ones harnessed technology unlike anything on Looming Gaia today. Despite centuries of research, no one yet understands how this technology worked. It seemed illogical like magic, yet it utilized iron which repels magic.

It's theorized that the Ancient Ones found some way to combine iron and magic, and the unstable energy from this combination was used for many purposes. Most notably, it was used to create highly volatile weapons of mass destruction--those which supposedly caused the Body of Gaia to rise when they were launched.

It's possible that the Ancient Ones were fae because they used magic. But because they also interacted with iron a lot, perhaps they were commoners? Because they used both, does that mean they were gaians? Maybe they were commoners who built machines that allowed them to use magic. Or maybe they were fae who used advanced spells to tolerate iron. Unfortunately, we just don't know yet.

Many researchers think the Ancient Ones were a separate class all their own. Their artifacts aren't found very often, and what is found is always in rough shape, so researchers can only gather so much information from them.

Each artifact found is another little piece in the giant puzzle.

Long ago, Zareen Empire once created an experimental colony in the sea. They built a bio-dome on the sea floor, populated it with 100 slaves and prisoners, and sealed it for a couple decades. But when the empire returned to open it, they found only skeletons. What happened? At first the Empire thought the inhabitants ran out of resources, but this was not the case (the bio-dome was self-sustaining with farms and water purifiers) Rather, social order broke down and there was apparently a civil war. Too many doctors and skilled technicians were killed in the war, which caused the rest of the population to spiral towards a slow demise.

Zareen Empire abandoned the project out of shame and refused to make the results of the experiment public. The bio-dome was left in a remote region of the ocean, where it still remains today. Some think it's only a legend, and many assume it's haunted by bad spirits. Not many know about its origins with Zareen Empire. There are a lot of conspiracy theories surrounding this mysterious old bio-dome, and some dedicate their lives to finding it and unlocking its secrets, sort of like the real-world Atlantis.

Is there any way a commoner or other non magic use without any potential to use magic find a way to use it other than divinity?

Currently there is no known way to enable commoners to use magic, but it's something many people are trying to figure out.

There is evidence that the Greys (Ancient Ones) were a commoner species, and they may have had unique technologies that allowed them to use magic. No one has figured out how this technology works yet though, as only derelict ruins remain.

Question: Is it possible for Gaia to be killed or rendered unable to just destroy the people she’ll punish for making them the way they are? ‘Cus what I’m getting is that Gaia is an uncaring (Or caring in that abusive, “mother knows best!” way.) ass who lets the Celestials do whatever they want with the peoples souls, and who also has her Nymph’s kill people for not doing exactly what is told of them. If not is there a way to commit suicide that completely destroys your soul?

That's a very good question! Truthfully, no one really knows Gaia's true motives. The nymphs know more than anyone, but no single nymph knows the full scope of what's happening on a cosmic level. They each kind of get a little snippet of the story.

World Athenaeum researchers theorize that the universe is so big, that Gaia is the size of a bacterium by comparison. They believe there are creatures much larger than Her out in the cosmos, and she is far from the most powerful thing out there.

The point is, everything Gaia does could simply be for survival reasons. She seems to behave as if She can die. Some of Her actions may seem unfair from the perspective of peoples, but nature has no concept of right and wrong, or of justice.

It is known that long, long ago, Gaia was colonized by a sapient species that goes by many names. They were humanoid in shape, quite short and frail-bodied with large, bald heads and grey skin. What they called themselves is unknown, but today they are called "Ancient Dworfs", "Ancient Ones", "The Before People", or "The Greys".

Did Gaia create these people? Did they evolve from Her native beasts? Or did they colonize Her from somewhere beyond the stars? No one knows, but their civilizations grew to be technologically advanced. Eventually they developed weapons of mass destruction and waged war on eachother. The destruction caused immense damage to Gaia, and she was forced to destroy them in order to save Her own life. She ripped the great continent into pieces, killing all Greys and burying their civilizations deep in the ocean.

After this, Gaia created the peoples we know and love, and she created the nymphs to keep them in line, so that they would not repeat the Greys' mistakes. She blessed every person with a soul so that they may have an afterlife in the cosmos when their body dies. She also made a diverse variety of peoples rather than just one species, hoping that they would compete and keep eachother in line as well. She wanted to ensure that none of them became too powerful and dominated the others, so she gave them all their own strengths and weaknesses.

But why did Gaia create these peoples? Why try to replace the Greys at all? The exact reason isn't known, but some theorize that peoples may one day play a role in defending Gaia from other beings in the cosmos. Perhaps that situation hasn't come to pass yet, but Damijana is currently working on a space program, so that time could be sooner than we think!

As far as it's known, there are only two things which can destroy a soul: Gaia herself, and the Divine Executioner. Some think the Divine Executioner is an artifact invented by the Greys, while others think it was created by beings from the cosmos. This is just another piece of the puzzle which is shrouded in mystery.

We don't know if Gaia loves peoples, or if She is just using them to one day defend Her from something they can't yet comprehend. It's very possible that both things are true. Love isn't sunshine and rainbows all the time. Sometimes love means using a heavy hand for one's own good...

The celestials seem to play some role in all this. Some researchers think celestial realms are acting as "reserves" for Gaia's souls, others think this is a means of reproduction between Gaia and the celestials, and some think the celestials are just predatory cosmic creatures who feed on Gaia's souls.

There are so many mysteries to be uncovered!

What did the Ancient Ones look like?

I talked about them more in this older answer.

In short, they were thought to be humanoid in structure with large, bald heads and solid black eyes. They stood about half as tall as a human and their skin was most likely gray.

Researchers base this information off of ancient artworks. However, these artworks are highly stylized and decrepit with age, so there is a lot of contention about their accuracy.

Whats up with those ancients the people that were not forged by gaia what can you tell us that's not too spoileriey?

Not much is known about the so-called "Ancient Ones". They were a race of peoples that lived on Looming Gaia over 6,000 years ago, and it's believed that they were the cause of Gaia's rampage that tore the great continent apart, creating the version of Looming Gaia we know today.

What the World Athenaeum knows about these people is just what they have heard from nymphs and the celestials, plus what they've studied from artifacts these ancient peoples left behind. Gaia's rampage tore all the world's land apart and buried the vast majority of the Ancient Ones' civilizations very deep underground. Some sank to the deepest depths of the sea. But once in a blue moon, researchers will unearth a piece of this ancient world's strange technology and learn a little more.

Many researchers believe that the Ancient Ones were not native to Gaia, but instead came from somewhere else beyond the stars and colonized her body. They may have come from another galaxy, or even another universe entirely.

Researchers have found images of what they believe to be the Ancient Ones, but they are very worn, distorted, and hard to make out. It seemed this species was humanoid in its structure, with large bald heads and large black eyes. They appeared to be dworf-sized, which is why they are sometimes called "Ancient Dworfs" in some regions.

They wielded very advanced technologies that are still not understood. It's believed that they used highly destructive advanced weaponry to wage war on eachother, and it was this event that caused Gaia to rise up and destroy them.

After she wiped out the Ancient Ones, Gaia was thought to have used fragments of them to create many new species of people. The theory is that she created many different peoples so that no single one would become too powerful. They would hopefully keep eachother in check, and the nymphs were her backup plan in case they didn't.

I’ve seen an old post here talking about the ancient ones and the lost lands. So I’m gonna guess that their basically grey aliens based on their description. Where they actual natives to Gaia or where they real, true aliens that colonized the world eons ago? also what’s up with the toxic fog around the lost lands? It’s not magic since iron and spells don’t effect it. It’s not radiation since rads don’t glow, their half life would have long expired by this point nor do rads bleach the land dry?

Great questions! Yes, the Ancient Ones are meant to resemble grey aliens, and they were likely not native to Gaia. Little else is known beyond them except that they had technologies unlike anything that exists on Gaia today.

The toxic fog around Lostland is just as mysterious as they are. It's sometimes called "radiation", though it's not exactly like the radiation we know. Its properties are totally unique to itself. Unfortunately it's basically impossible to study, so not much info has been gathered. It's been confirmed that it's not magic, and it has magic-repellent properties, but it's not iron. It's theorized that the fog is leftover particles from some kind of weapon used by the Ancient Ones. Remains of this weapon might be scattered around Lostland itself, but no one's been able to get close enough to get to them yet.
