The majority (52 percent) of transgender patients surveyed for a new study have had negative experiences when it comes to receiving emergency department (ED) care. In total, 408 transgender people in Ontario were included in the analysis that also found 21 per cent reported having avoided the ED in a potential medical emergency because of fear of negative experiences.
Educating providers and direct care staff is essential to creating safe spaces for trans* and gender diverse individuals seeking healthcare. No one should have to think twice about going to the emergency room for a potentially life threatening condition because of fear of mistreatment by staff, doctors and surgeons. The Gender Expansion Project is committed to providing comprehensive education opportunities for health care professionals, in hope of creating an environment where gender diverse individuals feel comfortable seeking healthcare, especially in emergency situations.

Meet transgender woman and coder Teagan Widmer, whose latest app, Refuge Restrooms, highlights the importance of providing safe public accommodations for trans people.
Looking for a gender neutral restroom? Tegan Widmer has released Refuge Restrooms, an online app to search for gender neutral / accessible restrooms. The Gender Expansion Project is excited to jump onboard with this and we hope to expand the database to cover gender neutral restrooms throughout the state. Know of a gender neutral restroom in Montana that isn't currently listed? Add a listing on the site or email us at [email protected]

Butte City Council puts non-discrimination ordinance to a vote | January 15th, 2014
Join the Gender Expansion Project on January 15th at 7:30pm in Butte, Montana when the Butte City Council votes on a non-discrimination ordinance that would provide protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. We had previously posted that the ordinance was scheduled for January 8th, however, we were recently informed that it has been changed to the 15th. The meeting will be held in the Butte Silver Bow City Council Chambers. We invite everyone to come and get their voice out there for equality.
