Does anyone know how I can get a cheap adjustable dress form. I have two reasons for wanting one.
One, once I’m approved for full disability welfare, (in a century it feels like) I can earn up to $800 / month, without affecting my welfare payments and I want to actually EARN that. I have sewn for a long time, and I think even selling a dress once or twice a month would just help me feel useful, and give me an opportunity to earn money.
Secondly, I want to get married soon, I have my mum’s old wedding dress but it’s absurdly 80′s and I’m planning to completely re-do it, one so it fits me, because I’m smaller than my mum, and two so that it looks less 1980′s and more 1880′s. I have a design, but it’s not an easy thing to make without a dress form.
I’ve been sort of pseudo-saving for this, or at least trying to. the ones at the local discount sewing shop are $250. Ideally I’d like to spend under $100, If it’s over $150 though I don’t really see the point of not putting in the extra money and getting a new one with the comfort of being able to return to the store if it’s no good. I’ve been looking through craigslist and kijiji, and I’m just wondering if there is anywhere I’ve missed, or anywhere that’s likely to be selling them at reduced prices.
It has to be adjustable in the small range. I’m petite, and I need it to work for me, but having it adjustable also gives me more oporotunity for selling my work, and custom making for other people.
Also if you’re a petite feminine figured person who wants a custom outfit, I’m planning to start out with star trek uniforms as I’ve made them for myself before, they’re a fairly simple design, and it’s surprisingly hard to find good scant uniforms and non-tacky (read the communicator isn’t ironed on) uniforms. I can also do dresses and stuff and back and forth sketches and what not. But I probably won’t be able to start actually charging until a few months later at least. (they said it shouldn’t be longer than six months) and I have to acquire the dress form first. But if there is some interest I might be able to justify spending more on the store bought dress form for that. I don’t really know.
I want to invest in myself so I don’t live the rest of my life in poverty, but I’m scared to waste what little money I have. I just wish there was a way I could get it cheaply. A way I could feel like it quickly paid for itself, as opposed to paying retail, which would probably take a year to pay off. I don’t know. I’m sort of at a loss for my life path. And this seems like a good idea, but I can’t afford to get myself something to allow myself to earn part of a living.
I wish I could get it by like sewing someone a wedding dress or something. The woman who originally sewed my mum’s wedding dress was bartering with her parents to get counselling. But I feel like I don’t know enough people to do that with.
