i actually answered a similar question BUT i thought i could explain it better so im gonna run it back

again im definitely not an expert but i really like fun colours

a bit of a long post so cut

i’d probably describe my colour choices as exaggerated

generally when an object goes from light to midtone to shadow the colours get more saturated (this is not always true but it’s a good starting point)

so the more diagonal the relationship is, the more stylised it looks

*i learnt this from orenjikun on instagram. he makes cool informative stuff

i like to combine a more ‘realistic’ relationship with a stylised one by overlaying saturated over unsaturated

so i block in shadows w/ just a darker more saturated colour and lights with less saturated lighter colour.

then within an area i move the hue slider around for extra funkiness

in terms of where to shift it to, i consider

*other subjects

*undertones of the subjects itself

like here. local colour (pink) -> purple-ish

i chose purple because a nearby rohkx is purple (well magenta but yk)

and it’s a cooler tone than the warm local colour, which makes an interesting contrast but not tooo different

then adjust saturation and brightness as needed to match the values, and to personal preference:3

i use a soft blending brush w/ some colour jitter

for the. colourchangification. in the whole piece i used mostly shades of greens, pinks, purples, and blues to match the other characters’ colour schemes

then i don’t introduce too many new colours & it doesn’t look overcrowded (though that isnt a bad thing necessarily! )

this also means im basically adding in very stylised bounce light, which adds nice depth

bc some colours just inherently are perceived as more vibrant, using a more saturated colour makes an area appear brighter or glowy just by being there. even if the value is the same.

also i exaggerate undertones, kind of. for example something green will often have the shadows appear blue-ish. so then you can take that and make it Really Blue

i also really like complementary-ish colours for lighting, like blue on yellow, or green on red/orange

some of my fav colour combos to use are blue and green, blue and purple, red and orange. although you can really get silly w/ it

the most crucial part is that the values look correct (ie does it still look right in greyscale?)

you can do almost whatever as long as you get that down

i also just use my intuition sometimes. vibes are very powerful

but as a foundation the values are so so important. they do most of the work in making colour choices look correct

to finish it off i play around w/ curves and gradient maps to adjust contrast and the mood of the piece
