There was an awkward silence as Shelly looked at the girl in the chair. She had just finished shampooing and washing Maria’s hair, and was now getting a feel for it while inquiring as to what she wanted. However, the koopa had only gotten one or two suggestions out before Maria cut her short. Sure, Shelly had a tendency to try and “upsell” a little bit if the client hadn’t specified what they were looking for, but she hadn’t ever been shut down like this before. It was… uncomfortable.

“S-Sorry, I guess I do kinda get carried away sometimes…” she admitted with a nervous laugh, “So, uh… just a trim, then?”

Trying not to let his anxiety get to him, Vandan kept his eyes open for the kids’ boat to arrive.

Well, the most important thing to remember about natural hair is that you shouldn’t over-wash it, at least as far as shampoo is concerned. Shampooing very coiled or kinky hair too often can be drying to both the strands and scalp; while you should still wash it often for simple hygiene purposes, you only want to shampoo it around once a week.

Additionally, heavy petroleum and synthetic oils should be avoided, as they don’t nourish or feed the hair and scalp. Greasing the scalp with petroleum does keep hair lacquered and flat if you’re looking for that, but also may coat strands, and cause buildup and scalp irritation. You want to stick to light moisturizers that keep your hair hydrated but doesn’t weigh it down, like coconut oil or shea butter.

Well, I suppose that depends on what your definition of ‘uncontrollable hair’ is! I’ve seen a lot of people deride curly or natural hair as uncontrollable, which simply isn’t true. There are plenty of things you can do with that kind of hair with just a little prep and styling!

Of course, that’s not to say that such styles don’t require some effort on your part to maintain… If you are looking for something that requires little-to-no maintenance, I would recommend one of two things: Either a perm or straightening treatment (smooth and straight hair is much easier to manage if you’re short on time or resources), or a very short cut or crop - natural hair looks quite fetching even at incredibly short lengths! That said, both of those options are much more drastic than “working with what you have” so to speak; it’s ultimately up to you what you think best suits your needs!
