I appreciate your posts about Endeavor. It’s always been difficult to me to like him as a character for various reasons and of course with recent development I find it harder to try to see him in a good light like some characters in the manga do. But I’m well aware that that’s due to my own set of morals and I can also see why people would like him as a character. Hori has a habit of making characters very realistic — a bad person is usually never fully bad (ie: both Dabi and Endeavor are given depth to their actions) — and I appreciate that about his stories. I think that really reflects reality, and the arguments we have here about certain characters also reflect certain perspectives in society about certain types of people.
The only bad-bad character in bnha I can think of is actually AFO, because when you think about it, he is just gleefully evil, abusing others everyday like it's a normal thing to do, and never showing remorse about his actions. For him other characters are just pawns or tools and nothing else, we may say that he somewhat-ish cared for his brother, but it was so twisted that yeah, all I can see is a sociopath.
Endeavor on the other hand never tried yk be evil, nor wanted it. What is scary here is the fact that his abuse came out "naturally" and without planning it. All what he did was to "make his son perfect", he wasn't thinking about it as abuse, but as training, and realization came out much later and well, definitely too late. What is amazing here is the fact, that from one side we had this natural born abuser with no compassion to his own children, and from the other side we have a man who is amazing at hero work and being a teacher. His coworkers admire him, He was probably the best mentor Deku ever had, and his remorse over what he did seems to be genuine.
But still we have things like him freezing the second when he realized that Touya is alive, and ignored his tortured second son, Shoto, and his first reaction in hospital was that he didn't wanted to live anymore, showing how weak he can be.
That's actually pretty interesting and that's why I like him and prefer to read chapters about him than AFO who of course is terrifying bu you still see him as, well, cartoon villain.
And Endeavor seems to be pretty much alive character.
So yeah I understand that people may hate him due to their morals and that's totally fine!
I just like his character because of how well written and terrifying he is compared to the true villain of the story.
And thank you for reading my rant ^^
