i think it’s just hard to win the lady byng as a star player of mack’s caliber because of how much more they have to deal with

oh yeah totally. i mean, we joke around, but mack actually does conduct himself extremely well for a nineteen-year-old star on the ice. he was second in penalties drawn this past season, and that was only from penalties that were actually called. more often than not, it felt like refs refused to call anything when he was being repeatedly crosschecked or held or tripped or interfered with or elbowed in the head. he’s the most targeted player on the sharks by far, and he gets hit and pinballed around so often it’s honestly impressive that he’s able to brush most of it off and immediately get up and keep skating

most of the time, he keeps his cool so well that i never blame him for the rare instances where he’s been smacked around so much to no calls and finally gets fed up and fights back. you love to see that kind of fire in your star player, and it’s really rare that a star player is as willing to jump into scrums for his teammates as mack is. and of course that’s not even mentioning how he’ll be the first one to shove at anyone who dares enter asky’s crease after a whistle. number one goalie lover macklin celebrini will protect his goalie to his dying breath. mack’s fire is what makes him such a damn good hockey player, and probably another reason why every other player in the league is so impressed with him and admires him the way they do, despite being that young

i mean, have you SEEN the way asky and mack hug each other after games? the way after scoring that one goal in overtime for a hat trick, mack immediately pointed to asky on the other side of the ice and headed to him first where asky met him in the middle before the rest of their teammates could even get to them? the way mack always gives his compliments to asky? the way asky talked about mack in that one russian interview?

they’re so close, and SO fond of each other. i almost don’t blame will for being jealous (and i love the idea of asky rubbing their bond in will’s face just to mess with him a little because he’s so protective of mack and is still waiting for will to prove he’s good enough for him)
