When I watched the scene of news about Hunter/x breakup from Kpop Demon Hunters movie, and I noticed there was a sign language interpreter next to new reporter (1:49-1:55). It made me happy that Deaf community get recognition even a few seconds.
I read the unchanging polaris by arsonide and one chapter mentioned a part about Rumi signing. I drew this part because I appreciate that the author included a piece of Deaf world. That inspired me to write a polytrix fanfic but I’m a bit nervous because it will be my first time writing a fic. I’m not amazing writer or anything. If you still interested in ideas I have. Keep reading below.
The fic will focus on AU where it takes place in college settings. I will share some experiences of Deaf person in the hearing world as I am Deaf Asian American myself. The experiences including ableism, audism, accessibility/accommodations issues, Deaf myths and facts.
Rumi will be Deaf and navigate the life of being Deaf person in the hearing world. She lost her hearing at a young age and learned sign language. She took years of speech therapy and lip reading training but she hate the attention when people staring at her when she signs. She stopped signing in the public until she met Zoey at a college.
Zoey will be CODA (child of Deaf adults) where she was struggling with two sides of Deaf and hearing worlds. Two Deaf parents, one was American and one was Korean so she was raised with both ASL and KSL but she was rusty in KSL since she grew up in the US. When she moved to South Korea and she met Rumi and discovered she was Deaf so she tried to relearn KSL again so she can communicate with her.
Mira will be HoH (Hard of Hearing) where she lost hearing at 12 and got two hearing aids for both ears. But she never learn sign language. She was used to speaking and no experience in lip reading. She started learning sign language when she met Rumi and Zoey at a college.
In the summary, the fic I’m writing will focus on Deaf community and daily life of a Deaf person. I want to see more Deaf representation. I was thinking of mixing ASL (American Sign Language) and KSL (Korean Sign Language) but the problem is I have no experience with KSL so I need to research more on it. For now, it will be mainly ASL throughout the story. FYI English isn’t my first language so it would be not a high quality fic.
Are there any Deaf or ASL signers who are also COVID conscious here on tumblr? I’m a hearing ASL interpreter from NYS who grew up with Deaf family and ASL. I’m finally doing a lot better from severe health issues post COVID infection in 2022 and want to connect with more of my community.
I’m low key a recluse bc I work from home, don’t have a car so I can’t go out much, and getting sick had me lose touch with a lot of my network. I don’t know many terps who are covid conscious and don’t know any Deaf covid conscious folks. I’m finally feeling more stable and am missing being a social human. Let me know if you’re down for some Covid cautious sign time?
If you're reading this then you have a phone or computer. If you have a phone or computer you have YouTube
Bill vicars, learn how to sign, chrissy Marshall, sign Duo, signed with heart
Stop making stupid excuses and just LEARN IT! Learn it for Deaf and hoh people obviously but also learn it for disabled people and autistics and people who are non vocal/verbal learn it for your kids so they can be bilingual or multilingual learn it for your brain health. JUST DO IT. nothing is stopping you except your own excuses.
I wish every day as a HEARING person I had someone, anyone to sign with. Now imagine what it's like for a Deaf person. Just. Learn it. For everyone.
wild how i can leave my ASL class feeling cool and confident abt my skills and then i leave my interpreting class feeling like i’m never going to know the language well enough to provide access for the Deaf community. goes to show that understanding a language and interpreting a language really are two different skills.
hi, saw one of your posts talking about asl. i need help in translating english to asl and i have no clue on how to do it, can you please help me out on this? its a warsan shire poem and i want to translate it from english to asl for a little something i'm working on.
hey there, I’m afraid the answer is...
I’m not a native signer or anything of the sort. As I mentioned in that post, I defer to actual native ASL speakers when I draw sign, so I’m the LAST person you should be asking for help in a translation.
If you’re willing to go the distance and pay actual translators, I can suggest maybe googling websites that would link you to professional translators? Though from experience in the translation industry, I can’t promise it’ll be simple. Poem translation is something that’s often extremely difficult no matter what language - far more difficult that casual speech - and you’ll be looking at either a hefty price or... a rather ragged translation.
Otherwise, if you’re not seeking a professional translation, perhaps there’s a budding ASL interpreter/translator that would like a challenge? Feel free to reply in the comments! (Though as always, I only encourage paid work, as translators/interpreters are often underpaid as is.)
Sorry for what may be a bit of a disappointing reply, and good luck on your search!
I just had a business meeting in ASL which was awful (the meeting went fine and the people were very nice but business meetings are just gross) and I always feel like people think I’m a bad signer or not that fluent because I’m so awkward but I promise if you saw me speaking English (my native language) in the same situation I would be just as awkward. My ASL is very good, I’m just autistic in every language.
Hey if you’re Deaf or HoH and use ASL I have a question for you -
I am hearing and fluent in ASL, I don’t post myself signing online because of all the known reasons why a hearing person shouldn’t - however I’m wondering if that applies to signing while I speak on a video for accessibility rather than interpreting or teaching?
I caption everything but ASL obv isn’t English and I’m wondering if signing and speaking would make my content more accessible or if it would just come off as appropriation?
