ABOUT VERMIS

Vermis is a dark fantasy artbook and fictional game guide created by Plastiboo. Rather than relying on graphic shock value, it tells its story through melancholy, mystery, and an oppressive atmosphere. The world feels ancient, cursed, and lonely, encouraging exploration and interpretation instead of constant action or violence. It is presented as the official strategy guide for a video game that doesn't actually exist, allowing readers to piece together its lore through fragmented descriptions, item entries, and environmental storytelling.

Unlike many dark fantasy settings, Vermis is relatively restrained. It doesn't revolve around sexual abuse, excessive gore, or graphic scenes designed purely for shock. Instead, its horror comes from unsettling creatures, forgotten ruins, curses, body horror, existential themes, and the feeling of wandering through a dying world. While there is blood and some gore, it is generally used to reinforce the bleak atmosphere rather than to be gratuitous.

That said, Vermis still contains disturbing imagery and may touch on common fears and phobias, including decayed bodies, grotesque monsters, parasites, and other unsettling visuals. If you're sensitive to these themes, please keep that in mind before reading.

How does one go about translating? Was it hard? Thank you for the books btw! (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶) .ᐟ.ᐟ

Thanks for asking! And it's not problem at all—we're just happy to have made these available for everyone :}

Nick handled translating the third and fourth books, and I handled translating the second and first. The translation process looked quite different depending on who was doing the book, due to our differing skillsets and preferences:

- @nameko-nick is Brazilian and he grew up around a Latino/Hispanic community! So not only could he speak and understand Brazilian, but he also had a feel for other Latin languages and cultures. The third book he got was Brazilian, so it wasn't a problem for him (and it made him quite happy to find it was in his language, it's one of the reasons he likes headcanoning Ray as Brazilian! ♡)! The fourth book was in Italian, so it was slightly more challenging, but he was able to parse through most of the book without assistance from translators. In terms of his process, Nick preferred to take pictures of the pages to scan in, then edit the text for any discrepancies and go about translating from there :]

- I myself am only English speaking, although there are a few words in Spanish/a couple language conventions in Spanish I am familiar with. I preferred to type out all the text by hand instead of scan, and I was also able to create documents for both English and the original language for more accessibility! This ended up also being a good idea, so that Nick would be able to look between the original text and my translated text to make corrections. I unfortunately relied on an online translator for most of my work (WHICH I WOULD NOT NORMALLY RECOMMEND FOR PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATION), so having Nick here with his knowledge of latin languages and culture made me feel assured in what we were providing was accurate. Even if he is not Italian, Spanish, or Catalan, he could understand a lot of what was written in the books ♡

Once each translation was typed out, we made sure to highlight areas that needed further clarification, needed reworded, needed to be compared to the original text or localized for English readers, etc. Then, we would call together on discord to read and narrate/voice act the book together (SUPER fun), and we would make corrections along the way. He helped a lot with the localization and correcting translation errors, and I helped a lot with wording and punctuation/grammar. After our first run through, we would fix any remaining things, make sure the formatting looked good for each document, then I would get to work on typing the book summaries >:]

Finally, once that was complete, I would create the wikipedia page contents and we would share the links to the docs there! We also made sure to make copies of the original docs as well, just in case our accounts were compromised/the docs became unavailable for any reason.

It took us AWHILE to get all four books done. We started around summer of last year and finished the last translation just a few months ago! It was hard to balance the work and the other life events we had at the time. Sometimes we had to give certain sections extra thought, as we had to reword some but we also needed to preserve the original message in the text as much as possible. Writing those book summaries was also hard for me to start because they took awhile and were just slightly grueling PDJSJSKW.

But make no mistake: we went into this project with a lot of passion and it turned out to be SUPER rewarding in the end! And it's all the more rewarding now seeing how people react to the content in each book 🥹

Here’s is my oc, Chóngshēng (Chinese for reborn) (but real name, Li Chung) , she is the 14 year old daughter of Lin Chung and Sonia, but was sent to the 21st century to prevent the world from being destroyed but she also works at a Chinese buffet as a waitress, hired by her own descendants

Which one of the books you translated is your favorite? Have you thought about making comics based off of them?

There's several things to love about all the books, but I really like the 2nd—Three Suitors for Mystique Sonia—the most. All the first squad characters in the show have small hints to their backstory except for her, so when I was translating that book I was SUPER excited to find it was an interpretation of how she was cursed. AND WE ALSO GOT TO SEE THE FIRST YAKSHA VICTIM AS A HUMAN! It's crazy to think such big info had been published for years and many of us (if not most?) didn't know about it!

I also just adore Sonia's character anyways. I like her a lot in the show, but the book version also has just a little bit of extra sass/humor that is very funny to me pdODBAKSL

Oh, but I also love this book because of how much it made me think and feel. When I was translating it in real time, I was hanging on EVERY last translated word, especially during the scene she was cursed. The way it was written felt absolutely... devastating. The tragedy of Sonia's curse, HOW she got cursed, Marsyas' introduction and our witnessing of the very first Yaksha. How Sonia had no idea what was going on. How Marsyas didn't either. How none of First Squad was there to witness any of this. Ugh.

People can argue I'm reaching on this because this is a property targeted towards teens and children, but the scene felt so much like... an allegory for violence against women. Sonia was cursed because she rejected three men. She told three men no, and they retaliated in such a horrible way. In a way that will permanently impact her life.

That is also why I love this book, because even if this connection was entirely unintentional, it spoke to a very real issue to me.

Anyways, in regards to your latter question...

I have thought making tiny comics based off short scenes in the book could be fun! Especially some of little comedic bits. One that keeps coming to mind for me is the ending of the first book, with the reveal that the "invincibility ointment" is literally sun screen. I thought that was silly 😭
