something about jonelias just scratches my brain. idk why, but itās probably because i enjoy complicated love/hate dynamics and not because elias/jonah is the hottest character ever, definitely not, who would even say that? i donāt ship them, not really, but itās a very interesting idea
and thatās not even the point of this piece! itās more just me messing with control as a concept in a typical tma fashion as best i can while also still hating my art, iykwim

hereās some design notes:
on the hail mary:
- ryland is 38 and simon is 33 :)
- in my fic, simon gets teleported into the petrova line of tau ceti right before the eel gets him, and after rocky wakes up from their fishing trip mishap. they pick him up and work on healing together!
- if iām remembering right, in the book ryland says that he got second-degree burns from the ammonia of rockyās atmosphere when sticking him back in his tunnels. i way overshot the healing time, but thatās kinda how second-degree burns look i think. the one from rockyās claw is from the movie and would definitely be a lot more than second-degree but i think i did an okay job differentiating them
- both of the shirts i gave ryland are ones i own irl and wear regularly! my āsay no to potā shirt is from connecticut, not maine, but i didnāt feel like correcting the google image. also since i posted a tiktok about the ābe greater than averageā shirt and got a few comments asking where i got it, itās from kennedy space center! they do still sell it as far as i know :)
- everything else about his appearance is entirely movie-based. i really like how they designed him, especially the dumb t-shirts lol. also i really like the jumpsuit-as-pants thing he has going on so here he is
- simonās are a bit different. i kinda figured that the corrosionās effect would resemble burns a bit but itās 100% more severe than rylandās so. also darker red because blood? i suppose? i feel really dumb not having done any research now BUT i can just use the excuse that at this point, the blood is doing just about everything it can to keep him alive kinda like it does in the movie, so this guy is effectively immortal and heals decently fast. i can do whatever i want i love my blorbos
- none of simonās clothes survived the blood, so heās wearing rylandās, though they are entirely too small for him despite ryland being the closest crew member to him in size. the tshirt design is one i remember my sixth grade english teacher having so i gave it to ryland and then simon by proxy because why not. ryland does get his jeans back eventually as you can see so the clothing exchange is fine for now! the shoes are yaoās, however, because they just happen to share a shoe size.
on erid (actual headcanon territory):
- ryland is 47 and simon is 42 :)
- in the book ryland mentions having a cane, but i gave him a modified forearm crutch instead since itād help with the increased gravity. the end bit looks like an eridian claw and has a mechanism to grab onto rough terrain, as well as grab objects from low heights when he canāt bend over because of his arthritis!
- he continues to wear the clothes he brought with him from earth even after all this time, because theyāre comfy to him. obviously during his malnutrition and recovery his weight fluctuates a lot, but it eventually settles back into his normal range so he can wear his dumb t-shirts again!
- he wears the jewelry rocky made for him every day. itās a common eridian tradition to give others a piece of your exoskeleton when youāre close to them (supported by the bit of adrianās in rockyās arm in the movie) so the necklace has bits of rocky, adrian, and several other eridians heās friends with. his earrings are extra bits of rocky and adrian! his students also like to make him jewelry so he wears those a lot too.
-also his watch is a modified eridian clock! he uses the same watchband that he wears in the movie because itās comfy for him even after the face itself breaks, so rocky fixes it for him so he remembers to go to class and eat and other important stuff that his audhd brain wouldnāt remember otherwise lol
- after being on erid for a while ryland decides to grow his hair out a bit, and since simon gets a proper prosthetic arm theyāre able to help each other with haircare! itās self-indulgent for me but idc iāll draw all the long hair men i want. also he greys more than simon for reasons iāll mention in a second
- on that topic, simonās hair is properly long. he keeps it for a few reasons: it reminds him of how his mom used to care for it for him when he was a kid, he likes having ryland help him with it (ryland loves it too), and it looks awesome on him and everyone agrees. he keeps it in a braid like this most of the time, though he tries different styles very regularly, often with rylandās help. he has bits of adrian and rocky tied into it as well!
- he greys a lot slower, not just because heās younger but also because it takes a while for the bits of the blood in him to let him age, and it only happens after he finally accepts that heās safe and isnāt letting his carnal desire for survival overtake every other emotion he has. yippee trauma
- xenonite arm!! i was kinda going off of how rockyās inventions looked in the movie for the design, including how a lot of the base shapes are hexagonal, so he has joints that kinda look like d12 dice. it works though! the bits in his toolbelt attach to his fingers so he can do just about anything with it. and it does attach to his nerves (think fullmetal alchemist) so he can move it properly and somewhat feel with his fingertips. he can remove it and does sometimes, but after they really perfect the design he just keeps it on most of the time. theres also a silicone cover he can put on over it when heās doing more domestic things, because the joints do still get caught on stuff, and also itās softer for fluff purposes iykwim
- he also keeps his garden shears on him because of course he does. this guy LOVES plants, so whenever heās not with rockyās engineering team or with ryland, heās in his garden or tending to his trees. he has tool attachments for that too, which he designed himself since the eridians arenāt used to having trees around.
- since simon doesnāt have anything that fits him, the eridians make him a bunch of clothes using designs from the endless amount of information on humanity the hail mary has. he prefers much looser clothing (sensory issues. autism) and tends to be better at putting outfits together than ryland, who just cares about comfort. he likes looking nicer but doesnāt like attracting attention to himself, so he usually wears simple button-ups and the equivalent of loose dress pants.
- there is a point later where they have a proper eridian mating ceremony, andāiām gonna need yāall to get cool with a lot of things real quickāthey exchange a bit of the skin on their forearms like eridians do! itās only the top few layers and they have to do a lot of testing on both of their cells to confirm that theyāre biologically compatible after simonās mutations, but it works because i say so. also they do have a version of a traditional earth wedding as well, and simon takes rylandās last name because he doesnāt have one :)

notes on mikeās design: a lot of people draw him in like full flight gear when heās talking to jon but i just thought: why would he wear all that in his own house? like dawg when iām home i just wanna chill and he seems pretty chill at first so i doubt heās wearing his scarf and all yknow?
but mostly i just went off of the descriptions in mag46 and mag75, and the rest is my own personal headcanon. i love my fellow short king vastard <3
also for jon: it may look like heās wearing a sweater here and as much as he would have liked to he is not. that is a longsleeve graphic tshirt (you decide what the graphic is) that heās trying desperately to make look more professional. the undershirt is wrinkled and borrowed from georgie. there is no professionalism to be found

oliver is one of those characters that doesnāt really differ from the fanon design in my mind. there are a couple of differences though:
idk why everyone decided he was goth? i mean i think itād be cool but it seems almost stereotypical for an avatar of the end to be goth yknow. my personal headcanon is that he got into motorcycles after taking over the life of thomas pritchard, so most of the time he just wears a tshirt and a biking jacket, along with some jeans heās had for years and the most basic boots he could find. the tshirt itself is the official grifterās bone one, just as a reference to the fact he was in that episode (i feel like a lot of people forget that as well so i had to acknowledge it). i gave him the skull ring because i really like the trope of death guys having skull rings, and the one with the black stone is just cool. also, note: there is a black ring on his left middle finger. :)
i love the idea of certain fears turning their avatarsā hair white so much, as is obvious if youāve seen the rest of my art. the lonely, the end, and the web are the ones i picture it with the most, therefore my martin and oliver (and annabelle if i ever decide to draw her, idk if i will) have white roots. for oliver specifically, i donāt think heās the kind of guy to put too much effort into his appearance, so heās had the same locs for at least a decade and has learned how to retwist them himself when he feels like it.
other than that i just went with the description of him from the aforementioned mag42: āhe was tall, black and careworn, deep lines of worry etched into an otherwise handsome face.ā guy is canonically hot and thatās about it
also yes, jon is still there, you just canāt see him because i wanted to mess with perspective in this one. he does have the death roots, and i like to think theyāre covering his eyes and mouth before they recede. and he definitely looks terribleāwell, more terrible than usual, anyway.
i have never seen a british hospital. i do not like to research for my art. this is obvious.

s2: i promised i would draw him in a skirt a long time ago, this is me keeping my word. this is his āhey i might die any second now so i donāt think dress code matters anymore i know you all want me dead fuck youā era. also elias gifted him that necklace for reasons that were not obvious to him at that time, and he thinks itās cool, so he wears it. the two pins on his bag are the bi flag and the autism symbol. the rest of the fit is based on one i wear regularly irl so uh yea
s3: i so desperately love the idea of him in one of those zigzag headbands, so i drew it. this is him before his encounters with jude and daisy, so those scars arenāt there, but the shoulder one from michael is. idk if iām confusing the placement there but one could reasonably be careless with a bread knife and injure themselves there, right? yea itās supposed to be a shitty excuse idk
s4: this is the one of the first days after he returns to the institute and therefore is still wearing his glasses out of habit. he does not need them anymore. also his eyes are definitely bright green there but heāsāas i saidānot having a good time so you canāt see them. also sweater vest moment because he couldnāt have been bothered to put anything complicated together that day.
s5: the proportion of martinās hand to his face is based on my partnerās hand in relation to my face, which is equally as large as depicted. they are my martin/my reason. not much is different here from my other headcanon post so go look at that for more design notes.
also, generally, i think my design for him has changed. this is literally only because grey streaks are very difficult for me to draw traditionally so i just had his hair fade to white, which in all honesty is more realistic. i also just really like that idea so yeah
also i did draw him in more outfits a while ago to fulfill my desire of treating this grown man like a paper doll. i donāt like it too much but iāll add it here because i donāt just want to leave it sitting in my creative cloud.
these are circa s3 when he actually felt like putting in effort (and wasnāt occupied by travelling or being kidnapped), which he does sometimes despite everything. theyāre also all based on real outfits i wear irl, minus the skirt.
