Some books are meant to be devoured; others flow like a river somewhere in the mountains - easily, but not without determination. (There are a grand total of zero mountains in Florida, so I set the vibe with a photo for this one last week while I was in between wipe outs in the great state of Colorado.) But anyways, Love and Other Words is the latter in the sense that it didn’t yank me along or shout at me to turn the page. Though I would absolutely classify this one as a member of my least favorite genre - romance, for those of you who are new here - the deployment of the friends-to-lovers trope felt more authentic and believable than superficial.

I have a lot of respect for a well-done friends-to-lovers romance because building the history and endurance of the friendship - and then transitioning it - requires more than a lust-filled spark of instant attraction at a bar or in a parking lot or on Zoom - wherever meet-cutes take place these days. The establishment this type of a relationship on the page requires - as it does in real life - attention to detail and effort.

Macy and Elliot - and their story - charmed me. Was this something exquisite? A must-read? A changed-my-life-and-redefined-my-thoughts-about-romance type of book? No. But it was better than average. Fans of Christina Lauren will like this one; fans of palate-cleansers in between YA fantasy reads (it’s me, I’m the fan of palate cleansers in between YA fantasy reads) will like it as well.

For perspective’s sake, I’d say this is much better than Beach Read but at the same time nowhere near as good as How to Fail at Flirting.
