warnings: lots and lots and lots of fluff (and very little angst but not really angst?)
“Ohmigosh, just stay put!”
Thorin furrowed his eyebrows together at the faint sound of your voice. He pressed his ear up against your bedroom door, your giggles becoming much more clear to him. He decided to eavesdrop a little bit longer before interfering.
“Ah! Hey, stop doing that! This dress was expens- You little devil!”
Your playful giggling rang throughout the room as your footsteps became much faster, as if you were chasing something around. Curiosity getting the best of him, Thorin opened the door, entering the room.
You were kneeling on the floor, looking under your bed, your back turned to Thorin.
“Y/N..” Thorin grumbled. “What on Middle Earth are you up to?”
“Wait wait wait!”
“Answer my que-”
“Shut up!”
Thorin let out an exasperated sigh and walked over to the bed beside you.
“Aha! There you are, you evil creature!”
Before Thorin could react, you reached out under the bed and pulled a furry little creature out, holding it in your arms like a baby. It let out a little mewl, causing you to giggle once more. You held the kitten up to Thorin and picked up its paws, making a little wave gesture.
“Y/N. No.”
You stuck out your tongue at Thorin, mocking him. “Y/N. Yes!”
“Absolutely not, Y/N! We’ve already gone over this.” Thorin face palmed, shaking his head. He exhaled, “What made you think it’d be a good idea to keep a pet here?”
“Well..” You started. “I was taking a walk this morning and found this little guy on the streets. Nobody was paying any attention to him soooo I took him back here, cleaned him up, fed him, and played with him a bit.”
Thorin looked around the room, just now noticing the knocked over items, scratched up curtains, and so on.
“A bit, huh?” He said to himself. “Mahal, it feels like I’m babysitting a child.” To be fair, you were many years younger than Thorin. Thorin leaned over to you, inspecting the little kitty in your arms.
“And,” you added, fake pouting. “Since you never spend time with me anymore, it’d be nice to have a little play mate who at least appreciates my love and affection.” Of course you were being sarcastic, but Thorin sensed the hint of seriousness in your voice.
“So.. Have you picked a name for it.. her.. him?”
“First of all, it’s a he.. Second, nope.” You played with your hair, pushing your hair behind your ears and turned to Thorin. “I was actually waiting for you to come back to help me pick a name for him.”
Thorin let out a small chuckle, looking at the kitten, then back at you. “Really?”
You nodded eagerly. “Mhm!”
Thorin took a little moment to think while you looked up at him, admiring his ethereal beauty. You found yourself cheesing wildly, thinking about how lucky you were to be made for him and him for you.
While you were lost in your own thoughts, Thorin could very easily tell what you were doing. He wasn’t stupid. Every time you thought you were being sneaky with your lingering stares, Thorin was quick to catch you. You made it too obvious. However it did boost his ego, and he couldn’t lie and say he didn’t enjoy it.
“Well? I’m waiting,” you said sassily, playfully rolling your eyes at Thorin.
“Oh, really? Well I was waiting for you to finish your daydreams about me.” Thorin noticed your eyes widen, your cheeks going red with embarrassment. “Didn’t want to interrupt you.”
Trying to change the subject, you cleared your throat. “Yeah, uh-huh, well, what have you got?”
“Garbage. We’ll call him garbage.”
You pouted. “No! Keep that up and I’ll kick you out of the bed. Then the kitty can sleep with me.”
Thorin looked the kitten in its eyes, narrowing his piercing baby blues. He felt jealous of the kitten for stealing away his One.
But Thorin knew how passionate you were about animals and decided not to be a big grump and ruin this for you. He silently accepted that there was no way you were going to just let the kitten go after forming a little bond with it.
Thorin paused for a moment. “Theo.”
You let out another giggle. “Theo? Really?”
“Oh, don’t laugh at me.”
“No, I’m not laughing at you! It’s such a cute name. I didn’t think you’d be good at this.”
You let the little kitten down as it was beginning to fall asleep and joined Thorin on the bed, pulling him down to lay next to you, catching him off guard.
Thorin started, “You know.. Kili’s allergic to cats.”
You scoffed. “Well, it’s a good thing it’s not his cat, right?”
“Yeah..” Thorin hummed. “Then I guess I’ll have to stay home more often, now.”
“Awe! Could it be that Thorin Oakenshield is a big fluff after all?”
Thorin rolled his eyes at your childish teasing, but laughed anyways. He had to admit that he did miss this. He was always busy with his kingly duties that he never had as much time for you. Thorin figured it was time for that to change, realizing how much he was missing.
He snapped out of his thoughts at the sound of your yawn. You raised your arms above your head and stretched, before plopping back down beside Thorin. You struggled to keep your eyes open as they got droopier by the second. Thorin wrapped his arms around you and pulled you under the covers with him, holding you close.
“You look exhausted. Come here.”
You hummed, “I missed this.” You desperately clung onto the sides of Thorin’s tunic, as if you were holding onto your life. “Are you going to leave again tomorrow?”
Thorin thought for a moment.
“No, not this time. But don’t worry about it.” He rubbed your back, soothing you to sleep. “I’m right here.”
