do you know if there's a reason why there's so few mods for team sonic racing/sonic all-stars racers on steam? can they just not be modded or something?
It’s probably because they use VAC, which stands for “Valve Anti-Cheat.” It’s a bit of code used specifically in online multiplayer games as a way to combat cheating. Getting a VAC ban is permanent and something that’s generally avoided, if possible.
Modifying game assets could trigger VAC auto-detection measures and instantly get you banned not just from Sonic Racing, but from most multiplayer games on Steam. Forever.
For mods to be successfully made for those games, you’d have to strip the DRM out of them first. Not impossible, but an extra step before you could even get started trying to mod them, and an extra step to add for anyone who downloads mods created with the DRM-free version of the game.
So it’s probably not really considered worth the hassle, and it’s one of those things that may actually draw negative attention from Sega, given you’d be treading closer to enabling piracy.
