5 things you like about yourself meme

Tagged by @sarah-the-ninja here, I need to list 5 things I like about myself.

1) This always feels so stuck up when I say it, so if someone has a suggestion on how I can say it less stuck-up-ish in the future I’d love to hear: I like that I’m smart. I make connections between things, I see the big picture in many situations (though not all), I’m also academically smart (I do well in my classes, I test well, I knew the rules and expectations of K-12 when I was a student, and now I know the rules and expectations of academia as both a student and faculty), I’m studying in a field that’s typically seen as “hard” and I did well in my classes.

2) I like that I have a bent towards social justice. I haven’t always felt social justice was needed, but now I do and am trying to do right by people less privileged than myself. I know I’m not perfect, but I’m trying.

3) I am slowly growing more comfortable with my gender expression. I haven’t been stereotypically femme like ever in my life, but I’m starting to become more aware of / conscious of this fact, and be more willing to express my non-conformity, such as having had short hair on and off for much of my life and currently having an undercut, or preferring dress slacks for work to skirts. I purposefully dress more femme towards the start of a semester, even including makeup, and I am consciously aware that this is performative, and I’m slowly growing to accept that it is a decision that is both forced upon me by a shitty binary gender-based society, and that it is also simultaneously a voluntary decision (though one made to cope with that shitty society).

4) I have a strong work ethic, especially when I’m working for other people.

5) I try to be nice to everyone I meet, and I assume they all have good intentions.

14) if you can live anywhere in the world where would it be? why?

I really like where I am now, it’s got so much within an easy travel distance: decent food, museums, beaches, live performances, academia, liberal attitudes, comparatively low crime, comparatively nice people. I think I’d really just like to move my work closer to where I live. :-P

30) whats your favorite candle scent?

Many scented candles (for example all of Yankee Candle) trigger my asthma. I like natural beeswax candles with their inherent mild honey scent.

64) Favorite dipping sauce?

That depends so much on what I’m eating with it. But I love Chinese food, and there’s two sauces whose dishes I really like with them: soupy dumplings, which you dip in a black vinegar dumpling sauce (which you can simulate if you can’t buy dumpling sauce by mixing equal parts of soy sauce and white vinegar) with ginger; and scallion pancakes, which you dip in a slightly sweet soy sauce (maybe like soy sauce and teriyaki if you’re making/faking it at home?) with scallions. I also really like Taiwanese hot pot where you make your own sauce by mixing lots of other existing sauces and a garlic mash (yum) or whatever you personally like.

1. Coffee or tea?

Tea. Lately I’ve been really enjoying my homemade chai, but unfortunately that means I’m hooked on caffeine again which I don’t like to be even when it isn’t causing me migraines.

2. Favorite band?

I don’t know that I really have one right now. As a kid I really liked the Eagles.

3. What is something you have tried, but will never do again?

Hm, putting up with other people’s bullshit?

4. Whats your favorite cocktail?

I’m not a big drinker. Maybe a margarita? Make it mango or strawberry or something and it’s even better.

5. Which fictional character would you want to have in your team in a zombie apocalypse?

Jensen from the Losers would be pretty good: he can shoot AND fix the machines we find.

6. Do you sleep with a stuffed toy? What is it?

Not currently.

7. What was your worst job?

One-on-one tutoring for astronomy through my undergrad department. I was only tutoring the students whose teachers said they better talk to me, so they weren’t actually interested in learning. They’d show up without having any questions, without knowing what was going on in class, without the textbook, and just sit there sullen for the whole hour.

8. Which super power would you pick?

Probably telekinesis, it’s so versatile.

9. Does size matter to you?

Oh yeah, I really like ‘em thick, but they don’t need to be all that long or they won’t fit in my car, and the magnification would be too high.

...We’re talking telescopes right?

10. Who has influenced you the most in your life?

Probably my partner.

11. Would you want to be a part of your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is The Core. I would spend the whole trip to the center of the Earth laughing my ass off at how improbable and implausible the science was.

16 and 8 for the book meme, please!

16: what's a book that others wouldn't expect you to like?

Hm, maybe Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I read it in high school and really enjoyed it. It’s got a great sense of humor, and they play the card game Beggar My Neighbor, which is really similar to assorted card games I played in high school like War or ERS (Egyptian Rat Screw), so what’s not to like? But I don’t like most other classics from the same time period, so that why I think people wouldn’t expect me to like it.

8: what book are you proud of yourself for reading?

Man you picked tough ones, @dietraumerei! Like, I’m not really sure why people would be proud of reading any book, except maybe like “I survived this torture of a book I didn’t like”? But I usually just drop a book if I don’t like it - I had a hard time with this in school actually, b/c I had access to really good and enjoyable books, so if they assigned me something I didn’t like (Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, To Kill a Mockingbird, Julius Caesar) I just stopped reading it. It also helped that my mother was a high school English teacher, so I’d just get the Cliff Notes / Spark Notes / whatever from her if I couldn’t finish the book. One book I even figured out which guide the teacher was working from and just followed along in it instead of reading the book myself.

But that said, one book that I feel’s important for me to have read is I’ve read not 100% of, but like 80% of the Bible, primarily in the New Revised Standard Version. I’m an atheist, but I feel religion is important to society as a whole, to world history, and to the lives of many of my friends, so I think it’s a good thing for me to be well-versed in this important cultural thing. Most of what I read was in a college 200-level literature class called The Bible As Literature, but I’ve read some independently before and after that. I know enough that when students bring up Biblical things in my astronomy classes I’m usually able to converse intelligently, and sometimes even refute them.

Film meme: 1 and 7? (I kind of want to know all of them but I thought that might be overkill) :D

Y’know what, why not? I don’t often get people responding to these for me, and I need something relatively brainless before I go to bed. (Spent the last 6 hours rewriting lesson plans on gravity, weightlessness, Kepler’s Laws, and writing tests on both those plans, and on those of colleagues, about spectra, light, and Kepler’s Laws.) So I’ll answer as many as I can as well as I can, while being half braindead. :)

1. What’s the most depressing movie you’ve ever watched?

I think I’d have to say Training Day (Wikipedia). It was just so bleak and hopeless. I’m really not a fan of films where the line between the goodies and baddies is blurred that far.

2. What’s the most disturbing movie you’ve ever watched?

I don’t tend to watch disturbing movies, but with some digging and help from my partner remembering the name, it’s probably Cthulhu (Wikipedia).

3. An actor/actress you’ve seen in more than 8 movies? Name the movies.

So I’m really bad with names, I’m getting increasingly bad with faces, but I also dislike seeing movies with people who I recognize. Put this all together and this was also a really tough one for me to figure out. But in the end Bruce Willis was the only one I could think of and with the help of Wikipedia, I’ve seen him in: (1) Die Hard, (2) Look Who’s Talking, (3) Die Hard 2, (4) Loaded Weapon 1, (5) Pulp Fiction, (6) Die Hard with a Vengeance, (7) 12 Monkeys, (8) The Fifth Element, (9) Armageddon, (10) The Sixth Sense, (11) Unbreakable, (12) Sin City, (13) Grindhouse: Planet Terror, (14) Live Free or Die Hard, and (15) Looper.

4. A film you could watch on repeat for the rest of your life?

Rent (Wikipedia) or The Phantom of the Opera at Royal Albert Hall (Wikipedia), just b/c I’ve seen both on Broadway and love the music. Quite possibly Cap 2, but I’m not certain yet.

5. What’s the very first film you remember watching?

Maybe Bambi? Apparently the first film I saw in the theater as an infant was the second Star Wars. And people wonder why I’m a geek/nerd. It runs in the family.

6. A film you wish you hadn’t watched?

Can’t think of one right now. Maybe Training Day?

7. A film you wish had a sequel?

Can’t think of one right now, and sadly that’s one of the ones you specifically asked for.

8. Which book would you like to see adapted into a film?

The Wheel of Time, not necessarily the whole series, but either the first one or “New Spring.” Basically I’m just curious how it would look visually.

9. The most aesthetically pleasing movie you’ve ever watched?

I think I only watched half of Pan’s Labyrinth, so I’ll have to go with The Last Unicorn (Wikipedia). Runners up include A Scanner Darkly and Labyrinth.

10. What’s your favourite movie director?

Um, no clue. Bad with names.

11. Your favourite movie genre?

Sci-fi action, followed closely by musicals.

12. A movie that holds a special place in your heart?

The Core (Wikipedia). It came out on the day I defended my first Master’s thesis, we sat in the front row and basically MST3K’d it until people yelled at us to shut up, and the science is hilariously bad. No I’m serious, it’s so bad that I actually literally laugh out loud from it.

13. Your favourite comedy film?

14. A music video you would love to see developed into a film?

Dunno…

15. A film everyone loves but you hate?

Not hate, but I’m just “enh” on Contact and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

16. A film you love but everyone else hates?

17. Which cinematic universe would you like to live in?

None in particular, I like my own. But I think it’d be pretty cool living in the MCU. Like, if I were writing fic about Tony Stark and Steve Rogers there, I’d be writing RPF! So maybe something like hockey would be fictional.

Edit: Oh man, now I want to write crack fic where Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel from Marvel comics) is writing RPF about the Avengers playing the fictional game of hockey. Hockey to them would be like quidditch to us. She’d be writing an RPF sports AU!

18. What’s your favourite biopic?

I don’t watch those, can I say Cap 2? :-P

19. Mainstream movies or indie movies?

Mainstream, just b/c I don’t hear enough about indies.

20. Old movies or contemporary movies?

Contemporary, but about old sci-fi books, like I, Robot.

Can I say Rent and POTO RAH again? ;) But nah for variety how about The Prince of Egypt (Wikipedia).
