While I’m posting, a couple announcements.  (1) I’ve been doing more reddit lately than Tumblr.  LMK if you want my reddit username, it’s not the same as this one.  (2) I’m going to be busy with the MIT Mystery Hunt this weekend (a puzzle-solving competition hosted at MIT), and then I go right back to Spring classes.  While I’ve got a queue, it might run out while I’m busy.  (3) I’m still on AO3, though I haven’t posted anything in forever.  Currently working on a Tony Stark & JARVIS The Time Traveler’s Wife AU, working title “The Time Traveler’s AI”.

Song stuck in my head: I’ve recently been listening to The Mountain Goats’ Lovecraft in Brooklyn on repeat, and been thinking I should see if anyone’s written a Stucky songfic to it.

What I’m wearing: Purple T-shirt from my partner donating blood, heathered blue zippered hoodie with Portland Maine stuff on it, Target sleep pants in dark blue with golden stars. 

Dream job: Professor at a state school with a 3/3 teaching load and the rest research!  

Dream trip: Australia

Favorite food: I’ve been craving fancy ramen lately.  But for my birthday (Jan 26) I’m going to be going to a shabu shabu (hot pot) place, so that’s awesome enough for me.  

Play any instruments: I sing second soprano, I can play a little rhythm guitar (like four chords), I know how to get noises out of a flute. 

Languages: English.  I took 4 years of Latin in high school, and 1 year of Spanish in college, but they didn’t really stick.  I can read subway signs in Spanish and French, and that’s about it.  

Favorite songs: Here’s the first screen’s worth of my current musical rotation...

Random fact: I bought my bird Kappa a cat toy, it’s this brightly colored plastic ball with holes and a bell in the middle, and she won’t stop playing with it, except I can’t tell if she thinks she’s mating with it, building a nest with it, or attacking it.  

Describe yourself as aesthetic things: I decided to just make myself a mini-moodboard.

7: Do you have any tattoos or piercings?

My ears are each pierced once, done when I was a baby like many white American kids of my generation — interestingly, yet another way my Chinese mother tried to make sure I was as assimilated as possible. I’m intermittent on whether I actually wear earrings or not.

No tattoos, but when I finish my PhD I’m thinking of getting the Ring Nebula / M57 (see my icon) with the text “ad astra per aspera” on my left forearm.

8: What would you say is your best quality?

Maybe reliability? Like, that just seems so mundane compared to some other things about me, but it’s also so rare, frustratingly.

15: What is your favorite word?

Huh, I don’t think I have one!

31: How does someone win your heart?

Be funny, geeky, and compassionate.

47: What’s your favorite holiday?

Used to be Halloween, I used to throw costume parties every year for more than 10 years straight. Then I moved and didn’t have as big an apartment for that, and it doesn’t quite have the same luster for me now.

Maybe just anything with fireworks now. There’s supposed to be fireworks on Monday for Memorial Day, woo!

49: Where’s the most magical place on earth?

Maybe just assorted beautiful places in nature? I’m thinking of I think it was my second date with my partner where we went on a hike up a mountain along the trails, and I timed it so we’d get to the top just before sunset, we watched the gorgeous sunset from the summit house, and then we walked back down the paved road in the twilight. That was beautiful. ❤️

1. Coffee or tea?

Tea.  Lately I’ve been really enjoying my homemade chai, but unfortunately that means I’m hooked on caffeine again which I don’t like to be even when it isn’t causing me migraines. 

2. Favorite band?

I don’t know that I really have one right now.  As a kid I really liked the Eagles.

3. What is something you have tried, but will never do again?

Hm, putting up with other people’s bullshit?

4. Whats your favorite cocktail?

I’m not a big drinker.  Maybe a margarita?  Make it mango or strawberry or something and it’s even better.  

5. Which fictional character would you want to have in your team in a zombie apocalypse?

Jensen from the Losers would be pretty good: he can shoot AND fix the machines we find.  

6. Do you sleep with a stuffed toy? What is it?

Not currently.

7. What was your worst job?

One-on-one tutoring for astronomy through my undergrad department.  I was only tutoring the students whose teachers said they better talk to me, so they weren’t actually interested in learning.  They’d show up without having any questions, without knowing what was going on in class, without the textbook, and just sit there sullen for the whole hour.  

8. Which super power would you pick?

Probably telekinesis, it’s so versatile.  

9. Does size matter to you?

Oh yeah, I really like ‘em thick, but they don’t need to be all that long or they won’t fit in my car, and the magnification would be too high.  

...We’re talking telescopes right?  

10. Who has influenced you the most in your life?

Probably my partner.  

11. Would you want to be a part of your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is The Core.  I would spend the whole trip to the center of the Earth laughing my ass off at how improbable and implausible the science was.

1: Why did choose your url?
 

I changed pseudonyms earlier this year and picked this one with help from gemini6ice on Twitter because I like stars (aster means star) and birds (roc like the giant mythological birds of prey).  He helped me try out a few different combos until I found one that I liked and no one had taken on Twitter, Tumblr, LJ, nor DW.  

2: What is your middle name?


Nope.  My full name is Aster Nope Roc.  ;)  

3: If you could own a fairytale/fictional pet, what would it be?
 

I dunno, I really like my actual real life bird Kappa, and if I didn’t have her I’d want a cockatoo.  :-P  Maybe an actual hypoallergenic cat, I mean they made genetically modified ones, but that didn’t go anywhere so they count as fictional right?

4: Favorite color? 

Today I’m going to say near UV, because near UV (as well as visible light) was used to discover Proxima Centauri b.  

5: Favorite song?
 Of all time? 

This changes too fast for me to really say I can have one OF ALL TIME.  That said though, I’ve been obsessed with Bastille’s Flaws for the past 48 hours, so it’s my favorite of right now. 

6: What are your top three fandoms?

I read and write MCU the most currently.  RotG is what got me into fandom/fanfic.  I haven’t watched BtVS (sorry not sorry, I liked the movie and the show never grabbed me), but I like reading Buffy crossed over with Avengers.  I’ve written a couple X-Men Charles and Erik fics, and a couple Inception ones.  But I’m really so firmly in MCU it’s not funny.  

7: Why do you enjoy Tumblr? 

Do I?  :-P  Mostly it’s just brainless, but I have made some friends here.

7. Favorite city?

I love being from New York City, center of the universe! (Sing it, girl!)  There is just so much to do, so much variety, so much good food, so much culture.  It’s got its down parts too, as people there tend to be pretty rude, but at the same time we come together when tragedy strikes and open our hearts to complete strangers.  (The 2002 Spider-Man film has a nice depiction of this in the Queensborough bridge fight.) 

11. Favorite author?

Really hard to say.  For profic, I’ve enjoyed everything Orson Scott Card I’ve ever read, and one of my favorite books is from him, but I don’t know that I’d call him my favorite.  I loved Anne McCaffrey as a tween and teen, but as an adult I realize her brand of feminism was so problematic, really early second wave bordering on first wave honestly!  Larry Niven has really good science behind his science fiction.  @neil-gaiman weaves together mythology (mostly European-descended mythology) with a modern flair in a way I’ve yet to see elsewhere.  I’ve enjoyed a lot of the writings by authors I know, such as Anne Leckie and Rahul Kanakia.  

For fanfic, I enjoy anything @eustaciavye28 writes, especially if it involves Natasha Romanoff.  @not-poignant’s works in the Rise of the Guardians fandom is a big part of why I’m into fandom/fanfic now.  Anything @copperbadge writes makes me laugh.  Anything podtogether-ed by pprfaith and reena_jenkins is amazing.  

But yeah no, I can’t really narrow down to a single author. 

24. Book that made you cry?

Huh!  I can’t recall any right now.  I mean, I know it’s happened, but not so much as an adult now, and my tween/teen years were more than half my lifetime ago now.  

Oh!  The epilogue to Anne Frank’s “Diary of a Young Girl” (The Definitive Edition) actually got me a little teary-eyed when I finished it last week.  She was so close to making it, in so many ways, and so many of the other Annex occupants almost made it, it’s just horrible.  If you’ve never read The Definitive Edition I highly recommend it.  Frank’s original diary version is Version A, she started revising it for publication mid-way and that’s Version B.  After the war her father received most of both of those versions from a couple of their outside supporters who’d helped them in the Annex, and he revised and edited and combined them into Version C which is the most published version.  Version C has removed most references to her sexuality, as well as some of the less flattering descriptions of her relationship with her parents.  But in the 1990s in an effort to extend the copyright, the holders of the copyright created The Definitive Edition which combines Versions B and C, and the most obvious difference is how much more it talks about her sexuality - for example, in one entry she talks about being attracted to girls, and in another she compares girls’ and boys’ genital anatomy.  It’s really neat reading these restored entries.
