So for various reasons lately I've been revisiting artists I listened to 15-20 years ago that I haven't necessarily kept up with, reminiscing on old favorites and checking out what they've done in the interim. Here are a couple highlights:
BUCK-TICK - Ijin No Yoru The bass on this is just so deliciously thick and chunky and clear
Assemblage 23 - Rain Falls Down I love A23's whole general sound, the descended-from-Depeche-Mode vibe (which is very audible in this one)
Sonata Arctica - Champagne Bath The current round over at @Symphonic-power-metal-bracket has me digging up old faves that maybe haven't stuck in heavy rotation the past decade here. This one I love for the many keyboard textures and what strike me as very Classical sensibilities in the melodies and solos
Stabbing Westward - Push Then there is Stabbing Westward, a favorite band from my coming-of-age years, so like. Three decades ago but they've never really gone out of my regular rotation. They took a 20-year hiatus and then started releasing new stuff in 2021-22; it was very exciting to discover they were back and the singles I grabbed sounded fantastic. I have only recently gone back for the full album they put out and am very much enjoying it. I'd always described their sound as 'industrial-strength Depeche Mode' but there is a whole lot of The Cure and NIN in their DNA also, the former of which is heavily showcased in this song.
The Dreaming - Still Believe And then, while ensuring I hadn't missed any other of their releases I discovered that the singer from Stabbing Westward had a project called The Dreaming (!!!) that was his focus during that hiatus. A little less industrial than SW but very much just as good. There's definite echoes of Depeche Mode's 'It's No Good' in here (which they've also covered), and again, the aural visibility of the bass just makes my ears happy
And, as a bonus, I was very into Evanescence in the early 2Ks but have not kept up with them; I'm definitely vibing with their new song too though
