SIMPLE SAFETY INVENTION FOR BLIND USERS TRIGGERED BY COVID-19 ISOLATION BOREDOM! I invented a simple device to help blind people tell if their "Walking at Night Safety Light" is working. I mean the kind of safety light you wear on your arm so cars can see you! BY OPEN SOURCING THE INVENTION HERE THE DEVICE CANNOT BE PATENTED. (Copyright 2020 Ian Faulkner Soutar) Problem: My partner Barbara was struck by a car at night Jan 27 at night and is recovering fine. We know it could have been prevented with a SIMPLE flashing safety light worn on the arm or hat. Blind people should wear flashing lights at night to cross the street. But how do they know if the flashing light is working? They have no idea if a light works! This problem was pointed out to me by a Victoria blind person called "Ishtar" who I have lost touch with. At the time, a few months ago, we discussed possible solutions in the form of a light that beeped with every Flash. But she said that would be too annoying. So I had given up completely on the idea at the time. I was bored from Covid-19 isolation so I put on my inventors hat !!! A dead simple solution to the flashing light problem suddenly came to me. It's easy to design a device that would tell you if any flashing light was working by sound! No need to buy a custom light with annoying beeper. The market is small so I'm thinking of just giving the concept to the CNIB or the "Canadian National Insitute for the Blind". (One of the first inventions I ever did was for the blind 46 years ago and it was also donated to the CNIB.) Solution Details: A simple electronic "light tester" is created with a tiny photovoltaic solar cell that turns light into a beeping sound of variable frequency. The components to make it cost less than $10. The "light tester" can be held up to a flashing light and the light will trigger a beep that goes up and down in frequency periodically corresponding to the on and off flashing! The blind person can easily test their flashing light with the light testing device by holding it up to their flashing light.
