Minaret of the principal mosque. Siout, Upper Egypt. (1846-1849)
David Roberts (Scottish, 1796-1864)
An international excavation team recently discovered the 1880 BC burial chamber of the priestess Idy, daughter of the regional governor Djefai-Hapi I, in the necropolis of Assiut.
Idy was a priestess of the goddess Hathor and bore the title ‘Lady of the House,’ which identifies her as a woman from a wealthy family. Her burial was located in a sealed side chamber, which was built in a shaft approximately 14 metres deep within the tomb of Djefai-Hapi I. This shaft had been robbed in ancient times, but most of Idy's grave goods remained intact.
Found were two decorated wooden coffins decorated with images and texts for the afterlife, statues, daggers, remains of Idy´s robe, insignia of power, and food offerings. Analyses of her bones show, that Idy lives to be about 40 years old.
