Hi hi! So I am new to Kemeticism and I've been doing research on it. I came upon someone who explained that Kemeticism is really the worship of Amun Ra as he is the main diety and the rest of the Netjeru are simply facets of him. So it's more of an indirect worship of Amun Ra that is taking place. Is there any debate on this? I'd love to hear your thoughts on if this is something agreed or disagreed on in Kemeticism.
Hey!
So this comes from a 1980s academic debate between the two Egyptologists Jan Assmann and Eric Hornung.
E, Hornung, Concepts of god in Ancient Egypt, the one and the many.
J. Assmann, The Search for god in Ancient Egypt.
Both of them are available translated into English now :)
☀️☀️☀️
Extremely simplified, Hornung states that Egyptian believe was fully polytheist.
Assmann counters with evidence from the cult of Amun Ra in the New Kingdom. He uses the hymns and literature of the period which describe Amun Ra as the only god to conclude that Ancient Egyptian religious was not as polytheist as originally thought.
The two academically debate back and forth for a bit with no real conclusions.
☀️☀️☀️
Egyptian hymns often call the deity in question, the best, the only, the greatest, and then in complete contradiction say the exact same about the next god in question.
These two texts are very heavy, but I would recommend getting through them both if you can. I personally come down on the side of Hornung. And as such I don’t believe that it’s a just thinly vailed worship of Amun Ra. I am also a hard polytheist so Hornung’s work falls more squarely into my own belief.
☀️☀️☀️
I can’t and won’t tell you what to believe, but I would recommend if you can finding and reading these texts and making up your own mind if the worries you.
I hope I was helpful, and please let me know if you have any more questions or if anything didn’t make sense! :)
