âVillain?â Hero called, cautiously entering the familiar alleyway. âI need to talk to you.â
Only silence greeted them, the city still at this time of night. The only light came from a flickering street lamp a few meters away. Tears sprung to Heroâs eyes unbidden, a thousand emotions battling in their mind.
âPlease,â they said, voice breaking.Â
Suddenly, a hand around their neck forced them sideways, their head striking the wall with a thud. Hero cried out, momentarily blinded by the shock of the impact. The pressure on their throat was just intense enough to be painful, sharp fingernails digging into their skin.
âGive me one good reason why I shouldnât kill you right now,â Villain snarled into their ear.Â
âI-Iâm sorry,â Hero gasped. âPlease, I didnât know, I swear I didnât know-â
âOf course you knew, how could you not? Youâve spent nearly your whole life with them.â Villainâs voice was full of disgust. âBesides, it was obvious when I interrupted your little party that you were happy to serve them.â
âNo, you donât understand,â Hero pleaded, their voice getting higher as Villainâs grip tightened. âI only just found out, S-Superhero almost killed me, I had to-to pretend when you-â
âSupervillain, you mean.â
âY-yes, God, I canât-â
âHow could you possibly not have seen it?â Villain demanded. âThe greatest threat to the city and its most illustrious savior, the same person all along. There had to have been signs.â
âThey raised me to be a hero, Vil!â They could feel their nemesis tense at the nickname, still refusing to face Hero. âThey were the only parent I ever knew, of course I was b-blind to it. I opened the door, and thereâŠâ They swallowed hard, a tear running down to their jaw. âThere was Supervillain, taking off the m-mask, and they had that knifeâŠâ
âI have scars from that knife,â Villain said distantly, as if their mind was far away.
âSo do I.â Hero waited for Villain to respond, but they were as silent as the night, their hand still locked around Heroâs throat. âLook at me, Vil. Please.â
Slowly, Villainâs head tilted back, their face mostly covered in shadow. It took a moment for their eyes to find Heroâs, slightly wild and utterly lost. Instinctively, they reached up and wiped away the tear track from their nemesisâ cheek.Â
âYou really didnât know?â They whispered.
âi didnât know.â
âWhat are you going to do now?â
âI donât know. I donât⊠thereâs nowhere for me to go.â
âYou can come with me.â Villainâs voice was growing more certain. âWeâll figure it out together.â
âOkay,â Hero said, a little breathlessly. âOkay, yes, Iâll go with you. Just-please, my-â
âOh, God.â Villain released their grip, quickly stepping back. Hero took in a deep breath, massaging their tender neck. âHero, Iâm so sorry-â
They were cut off as Hero threw themself into Villain, burying their face in their nemesisâ chest like they would with a lover. It only took a second for Villain to wrap their arms around Hero in a tight hug, holding them as they sobbed.Â
âItâs okay,â they murmured into Heroâs hair. âI swear, itâs all going to be okay. Iâm sorry, Hero. Iâm so sorry.â
