I need to have a serious discussion for a second. There is one thing that gets me about the Boothill side of things with the HSR Fandom. Namely what I think is a “fanonizing” of Boothill’s character away from what’s canon.

Fans mischaracterize Boothill by portraying him as a cold and detached individual. Or portraying him as hyper violent. Or propagating harsh stereotypes against native americans. I still see people portraying him as illiterate and uneducated simply because he thinks it’s more efficient to use text to speech. This comes from like a lack of care for the character and because of “Funny Memes” they can use with his character (we all know the ones I’m referring to). Also they hypersexualize the shit out of him too, but like that’s a whole ass can of worms.

While other Fans will either OOC the shit out of him in every post they make, woobify his character to death, make him silly uwu, or completely and utterly devalue the writing of his character. It’s like they project so hard onto him that they turn him into someone else. Which is also damaging to his character. It literally goes both fucking ways dude. Either too violent or too soft.

I can think of like only a literal handful of people in this fandom who actually get Boothill’s character right, I’ve talked with a few of them. These people write really good whole ass essays about him and they get it right!

Listen, Boothill is an amazingly written character that the main HSR devs consistently do not give a shit about and constantly waste his potential. The individual who created his story wrote him to be beautifully tragic and intricate, with detail and amazing tie ins to Native American cultures and references.

Understanding this character and portraying him needs to be, I think, handled with more care by the fandom.

Boothill is not a hyper violent individual that’s a gross mischaracterization. Yet, he isn’t this completely harmless soft UWU boy that he gets woobified into either. People treat him completely as one or the other, when he is a perfectly tempered in between of the two. He’s complex with all these facets and intricacies, boiling him down to violent or wobby soft is a disservice to him.

Boothill kills people and has killed people, so stop fucking pulling his teeth out and making him all uwu soft and harmless. Let’s not forget he LITERALLY forged himself into a weapon. Also, I don’t recall who it was but someone brought up, in a post, the fact he was involved in gangs back in his homeworld before the IPC. We’ve seen him a little trigger happy (like Ironhide from Bayverse). So he is not a marshmallow by any means.

On the other hand, the people he does kill are bad guys so stop turning him into this heartless, cold monster. He’s soft to those he lets in his inner circle. This man has fucking trust issues, he’s lost everyone and everything he’s ever know. He HAS WALLS built up. I’m not saying Boothill isn’t soft because I fully believe he is, but he is only that way to those he had a deep connection to. He still puts up a protective front to those he’s familiar with but not close too, and puts up this steely wall with people he doesn’t know. It’s a defensive mechanism due to not wanting anyone close for fear of losing them too.

He’s nuanced and morally grey-ish. He’s chaotic good to lawful neutral. He’s supposed to be a good balance of when to know to use violence and when to know to be gentle. (I would also love to write more here about the beautiful tragedy his is and the Native American ties, but that’s going to be another analysis.) The vast majority of this fandom CANNOT for the life of them get this, or at least it seems that way to me. They seem to make him one way or another.

TO THOSE THAT DO POTRAY HIM WELL. Thank you for doing God’s fucking work, because the large majority of this fandom mischaracterizing the shit out of my favorite character is so mentally taxing, and I’m getting tired of it. It’s getting to the point where it’s “fanonizng” him and turning him into someone completely different than what is presented in canon.

Again (because let me say this twice):

I am not saying you cannot have Boothill show his soft side, or that you can’t put him in soft situations. I do that myself in headcanons. What I’m saying is don’t fricken Woodbify him or project onto him so hard you turn him into something he isn’t. Remember he has massive walls put up and he’s a gunslinging vigilante, he uses violence when it’s needed. Stop neutering him, he’s allowed to be intimidating he’s made himself a walking weapon for a reason.

I’m not saying that you can’t have Boothill show his tough side or have scenarios when he uses violence. Like I said before and like how 2.6 has shown us, Boothill knows when to use violence or when to be intimidating to get results. Just don’t make the violence, aggression, or cold attitude his only character trait. Boothill is far more complex a character than violent maniac criminal. He’s not uneducated or stupid, or redneck either so stop that -smacks hand-

Finally, I’m not saying you can’t have Boothill in sexy or 18+ situations. But please for the love of all, don’t hypersexualize him or make it so that he’s horny all the time every time (like what Genshin did to poor Kaeya).

I’m sorry to sound fucking harsh, but this fanon portrayal of Boothill has gradually gotten worse since his release. Like it’s cool to have fun with a character you love more than anything, but don’t overdo it so damn much that said character isn’t even close to the canon anymore. This shit happened to Kaeya and it’s pushed me away from him and Genshin because of how fucking bad it got. I don’t want to pushed away from Boothill.

One of my focuses in Beurkratti’s worldbuilding is accessibility, and that includes thinking a lot about medication.

Pain relief, ways to deal with mood swings, things like that.

Because potion making and magical properties and strange properties in flora and fauna are a thing, you end up with basically herbal and alternative medicine cranked up to 11.

Here’s this tea you can brew made of sunflower leaves we did like a bunch of stuff to first. It helps you when you’re blue and it’s a common remedy in places with both sunflowers and winter for “winter blues.”

It also is REALLY GREAT for depression.

Why? They don’t know. They barely know depression is a thing. Some people get sad for no reason more and deeper than others. Some people lose motivation. Drink some sunflower tea. Feel better.

And they know it works. They know how to make it so it works. But they don’t always know why doing these things makes them work, or why those plants combined does this thing. It’s a lot of experimental magical chemistry in the days before we had modern chemistry in any real capacity.

So it works. And it doesn’t seem to do any long term problems. So they keep using it.
