I’ve always appreciated old electronic games, having enjoyed some as a kid even before collecting them. Having recently bought that Game & Watch and having a blast with it, I wondered if other people nostalgic for them have recreated the experience for smartphones? Boy am I not disappointed.
Turns out there’s a slew of LCD game emulations, retro-style mock-ups, and even digital versions of entire handheld machines. One that particularly makes me smile is this app version of Astro Wars. Despite being released over a decade before I was born, I had one of these as a kid passed down from my older brothers. This version plays just as I remember, sound effects and all. I can play 37-year-old video games on my phone; the future is rad.
Today consisted of some Night In The Woods (which is utterly wonderful) , some Yakuza 0, showing a friend Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture and installing some experimental packages on my Raspberry Pi, including this awesome one that simulates olf handheld and tabletop LED/LCD games. Here in the UK, this one was called Astro Wars and just about everyone of a certian age owned it or had a friend who owned it.
