Kazakhstan's Asu Almabaev (18-2) is part of the recent influx of fighters from the country. He came in with an impressive record and wins over UFC vets like Zach Makovsky and Chris Kelades. He then debuted against Ode Osbourne, where he picked up a finish win. He's heading in the right direction.

Almabaev next draws CJ Vergara (12-4-1) as the two are set to fight on the prelims for UFC 299 this Saturday (March 9).

Kazakh flyweight Asu Almabaev (20-2) has been tossing around flyweights much bigger than him. He threw around Jose Johnson in his last fight and has improved to 3-0 in the UFC as a result. With the division in flux and in search of a new contender, Almabaev has a chance to shoot up the rankings with a big win this week.

He will face off with Matheus Nicolau (19-4-1) this Saturday (Oct. 19) at UFC Fight Night: Pereira vs. Hernandez.

It is moving week in the UFC men's flyweight division. We got 4 fights going down across the division this Saturday (June 15).

Kazakhstan's Asu Almabaev (19-2) is climbing the ranks at 125lbs. He's 2-0 in the UFC thus far. He recently took CJ Vergara to a decision and also submitted Ode Osbourne in his debut. With the division lacking new challengers for the title, Almabaev can insert himself into the picture with a couple of really impressive wins. He's set to face off with Jose Johnson (16-8) as part of UFC Fight Night: Perez vs. Taira.

Asu Almabayev dominates CJ Vergara to a UD win.

UFC and Tapology spell Almabayev different. Going to go with the one on the TV for now.

Not a scintillating fight but if you like offensive grappling and wrestling, Almabayev is a treat. His wrestling game is really cool. His ability to get to the lead leg and run the pipe is fantastic. At one point, he had Vergara's head under his chest standing. Instead of trying to get the overhook on the arm to control Vergara's position, he allows Vergara to posture out. This gives Almabayev access to the high crotch and takes the single leg and turns the corner for an easy takedown. Just clean stuff. And his ground game is cool. He was using the "Dagestani" arm cuff to isolate Vergara from side control and half guard and then threatening with the arm triangle on the opposite side as he tried to turn back as he was throwing GnP. His striking is made entirely of kicks - leg kicks, spinning kicks, etc. But get this guy some solid fundamentals on the feet and he becomes a real problem.

Asu Almabaev submits Ode Osbourne in the 2nd round via RNC.

More of a crank on the gym but still functional as Ode had nowhere to go.

A good debut for Asu Almabaev as that's basically how his fights go. He's good at getting guys down and beating folks up in the guard until the open up and he uses that to pass. Almabaev spent like 2 minutes inside of Osbourne's guard in the first round using GnP (head and body) to stay active. Osbourne went for two armbars and got his guard passed on the second and put into side control where Almabaev was able to throw elbows. Ode did better defending the first takedown (single leg attempt) but got taken down not too far later. Asu got to the back, cutting off the cage and locked up the RNC.

It's still strange to me that all the big prospects at 125lbs are wrestle-grapplers. Not sure what that means long term for the division. But it's good flyweight has some new talent. Was actually a little surprised by how big Ode was compared to Osbourne too. Something to be mindful of going forward.
