Alibi Idiris takes the decision over Ode Osbourne

Not a crazy fight or anything, but a decent first win in the UFC for Idiris. Probably not gonna light up the prospect radars. Idiris' game is a lot of switch ups and big movements. Lots of shifting punches into range. In fact, I think Ode cracked him a couple times in the first round with the lead hook from southpaw as Idiris went to shift into range. But Idiris' game is much more complete than Ode, who when the takedowns got mixed in just kept looking a full step behind. Like he had to think of responses. Dude's got some crazy dexterity on that right lead hand though. Didn't throw the jab as much as I would've liked to seen (esp since he was struggling with initiative) but when he did it broke rhythm. And like I said, that right hook is really good. It's the punch he hurt Steve Erceg with. Threw it here in a sequence in the 2nd where he doubled up with two body shots that visibly effected Idiris. Still, not enough to deal with the wrestling and volume.

Steve Erceg survives awful first round to take UD over Ode Osbourne.

Great fight. Terrible performance from Erceg and his team all things considered. Yeah, Ode is a terrific athlete and a surprisingly deadly puncher at 125lbs, but he's extremely limited. And he really telegraphed everything he wanted to do.

Ode kept allowing Erceg to step forward and he'd just tag him with the lead right hook (open stance match up - Osbourne is a southpaw). But Erceg kept stepping deep into range and getting hit with it until one managed to actually drop him. Ode followed up with a lot of big blows and it really looked like he was about to put Erceg out at several points. But Erceg rallied when Ode chose to wrestle with him on the mat. Did enough to see the bell and get to round 2. In the 2nd, Erceg went heavy to the wrestling. Shot after shot just to tie up Osbourne and negate the speed advantage. He started mixing in kicks and attacking off the breaks (Ode showed some serious improvements with his TDD). I think Erceg was mostly trying to recover but he managed to edge out the round. I think the 3rd is how most people envisioned this fight. Erceg using feints to draw out responses from Osbourne, forcing him to commit to coming forward and getting countered in return. Erceg eventually manages to turn these exchanges into a takedown where he almost locks up a RNC. Ode scrambles up but Erceg keeps head control and hits a gorgeous inside trip to get the fight back down and the fight ends with him landing big shots from mount.

If you scored that one a draw, couldn't blame you. Ode really had Erceg on the edge of a stoppage in the 1st round. It's really apparent that Erceg is just not defensively aware when he's in the pocket. And it seems like his team isn't doing much to fix that. But also, this is the dangers of getting pushed too quick. Everyone gets to see the holes and plan accordingly b/c they want your spot.

Jafel Filho submits Ode Osbourne in 1st!

One of the handful of fights I was interested in on this card. Filho makes quick work of Osbourne, dragging him down to the ground and working from top to get the RNC. Nice GnP to force Osbourne to twist and turn looking for relief. The takedown was cool. Got in deep on the waste of Osbourne who tried to wizzar out of position. Filho is able to close his grip and just pulls Osbourne back and over the top. Ends up in side control before moving to mount.

Interesting how many of these flyweight up and comers are stifling top control submission artist.

Asu Almabaev vs Ode Osbourne - UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs. Font

Kazakhstan's Asu Almabaev (18-2) is part of the recent influx of fighters from the country. He came in with an impressive record and wins over UFC vets like Zach Makovsky and Chris Kelades. He then debuted against Ode Osbourne, where he picked up a finish win. He's heading in the right direction.

Almabaev next draws CJ Vergara (12-4-1) as the two are set to fight on the prelims for UFC 299 this Saturday (March 9).

Tyson Nam stops Ode Osbourne in the 1st!

Counters a flying knee attempt from Ode with a big overhand right hand and puts Osbourne away. Surprised Nam was the underdog for this one. I like Ode but his game is all change-ups and big “catch opponents off guard” moves, like those flying knees. Nam is a limited fighter but he’s still a functional one with a ton of experience and some dynamite in his hands. Remember, this is the guy who stopped Eduardo Dantas when he was Bellator champion.

Manel Kape KOs Ode Osbourne in the 1st

It took Kape losing two fights by doing below the bare minimum, getting boxed up by Osborne for like 4 and a half minutes, and missing weight by 3lbs, by Kape finally showing a glimpse of what he is capable of. Kape hits a stance switch on the retreat, feints a kick that causes Osbourne to shoot, and then hits Ode with the flying knee to put him down and out. Brilliant knee from Kape. Just wish dude was more active in the cage. This is not the division to be relying on landing the perfect shot every fight.
