BLUF: Fernando as mirror!verse Seb in Lewis' retirement denial era

Basically it goes like this: Lewis spends the first half of the season frustrated he's not battling with Seb in the Aston Martin. He feels, like so many do, that it should be Seb's car. He loves the racing and the battles and feeling like he can trust an opponent in a car, but he doesn't want it to be Fernando.

Seb is both literally and figuratively off grid. He does have a cell phone, he does respond to texts, he will take, on occasion, a phone call from Lewis. Maybe Lewis says it a bit strongly, once, that it should be Seb's car, that Seb should be out there on the grid with him battling it out and Seb - firm, but gentle - tells Lewis that no, it shouldn't. That Seb wouldn't drive it the way Fernando drives it because he doesn't still want it the way Lewis wants it, the way Fernando, clearly, still wants it. Lewis pushes back because he hasn't emotionally processed what feels so deeply like rejection, and tells Seb that he does, that he's a racer at heart and he can't pretend that he isn't. And Seb - firm but sharp now - tells Lewis that he's not the one pretending, and he wants his family more than he wants to be fighting for fourth. Lewis wants to ask do you miss me do you think about me? but may not have it quite that articulate in his head, and if he did he'd probably be embarrased because Seb is with his family and anyway he and Lewis haven't ever been anything. Maybe he and Seb had a moment (a near miss, a flirtation, a fling, an earnest affair) back in the day and maybe Lewis has held a sliver of possibility since then and now Seb has pulled that splinter and it's just this ache where it used to be. Denial is a bitch.

All of this brings us to the Lewis/Fernando of it all. There was never a Lewis/Fernando before, only simmering animosity. All reports are that their relationship as teammates was never openly contentious but it must have sucked. Everything that happened back then. They've never been close - Fernando has never apologized, but a lot of years have gone by, things have changed. Fernando has thrown his weight in behind Lewis once or twice on things that mattered. And now he's the only driver on the grid who's known Lewis his whole career. He's the only driver who's battled with Lewis since day one. And he's the driver who has become the focal point for Lewis' frustrations.

It's probably when they get back from break. Maybe there's contact, maybe there's no contact but Fernando makes a move Lewis thinks is bullshit. It's probably fine in the grand scheme of racing but it's the last straw for Lewis. He throws a fit on radio, does the "I'm taking the high road" passive-aggressive thing after the race, and he's almost over it when he sees Fernando's response to his comments. He turns up at Fernando's trailer and starts cursing him out and Fernando is like, do you want to come in and do this or are you trying to cause a scene? Which. Maybe Lewis does want to cause a scene, maybe he wants to flip a table and yell and be angry at these wasted fucking seasons at the championship at the fact that he didn't press harder when he maybe could've had Seb at the choices he's made that have him single at 38 and feeling the approach of 40 like a runaway train.

And maybe Fernando gets it. Not for himself, necessarily, not like that, but. He's 42 (at time of fic). He's had a series of failed relationships. He's consistently prioritized this - racing - over everything else, and he's in a competitive car for the first time since 2013 and it's still not challenging for the title. He's watching the same changing of the guard Lewis is, getting all the same retirement questions, hearing the same people suggest he should be put out to pasture to let new blood into the sport.

So when Lewis comes into Fernando's trailer and starts yelling about the race Fernando can't help but laugh. He's not being a dick, he's just struck by the humor of two old drivers yelling at each other about fourth place.

This has already gotten too long, so if you want more let me know! Or come yell in my DMs! But mostly it's Lewis using Fernando as a way to deal with very unresolved feelings about Sebastian and what he wants out of F1 and how he'll feel about F1 if he never wins an 8th title and what does the "win condition" look like? and Fernando is willing to be Lewis' villain until he isn't, anymore.

They kiss until they’re out of breath. One of Valtteri’s legs has somehow ended up between Lewis’s; he can feel him there, the warmth of his arousal, in the way he’s grinding into Val’s thigh. It is going straight to his groin, the unabashedness of it, the nakedness of Lewis’s desire.

“You wanted me to do this,” Valtteri says in the space between them.

Lewis grins slowly. “Yeah,” he admits shamelessly. He is breathing hard, face flushed. 

“Is that why you did all that tonight?”

He tilts his head and grins. “Maybe.”

Valtteri sighs. “You’re terrible,” he says, but he’s grinning too. He cannot remember why he was angry in the first place.

Lewis looks smug. “Your dick disagrees.”

Valtteri looks down in the space between them, and then up at Lewis, at his bright eyes, his slightly breathless smile, the smudged kohl. Then, in one swift move, he lifts Lewis up. Lewis laughs, surprised, his legs winding around Valtteri’s waist. “Assertive,” he notes, leaning in to kiss Valtteri.

“You know me,” says Valtteri as he takes them to the bedroom, “I get things done.”

my filofax that my grandpa gifted me, it used to be his in the 80s and 90s and then he gave it to me abt 10 yrs ago, and i'm still using it to this day. i just did some googling to see if i can find a picture, and i didn't find a clear one but i did find this, it's a catalogue of filofaxes from 1987 and mine is the buckingham vinyl one in gray! which apparently is quite rare? i literally just found this out 😭

speaking of studying, clear sticky notes have also been a GODSEND especially when i want to add on notes to something i already wrote down. i have them in purple.

i also have a sticky tab system for my planner -- colorful ones for work-related stuff, and cat paw shaped ones for personal stuff

Nico hums to indicate he's listening as he examines the label on a jar of vegan peanut butter.

"There must've been others. I suppose Sebastian would know."

He tries not to bristle at the mention of Sebastian. "Yeah he would, he's a nerd about this kind of thing," he says, choosing to forego the peanut butter. "Anyway, I really don't think there's any reason to spiral, Lewis."

That stops Lewis short, as Nico knew it would. "I'm not — I'm not spiraling, Nico," he says. "I just... don't want. Like."

He seems frustrated, trying to find words for what he means. Nico already knows, but he waits anyway.

"I just don't want things to change," Lewis says in the end, the closest he can come to being vulnerable.

"I know," Nico says. "They won't."

"But you can't promise that," Lewis says. He's been holding a jar of chocolate spread for five minutes now. "No one can."

"No, I know, but." Nico sighs, grabs the jar from Lewis's hands and puts it in the cart. "Look at us, Lewis. We're shopping together. We're going to go back to our building, where we both have flats. We're going to be in the same team! This is everything we've ever wanted."

"I know, but—"

"But nothing," says Nico firmly. "Do you trust me?"

Lewis nods. "You know I do."

"Then trust me when I say we'll prove everyone wrong," Nico tells him, and gently nudges his shoulder with his own. "We'll be champions, Lewis! Well, you already are," he adds with a grin. "So I have to catch up now."

Slowly but surely, a smile grows on Lewis's face. "Well, I'm not going to make it easy for you!"

Nico laughs. "Counting on it."
