Maya had, compared to those around her, an easy childhood. While of course the world she grew up in was a mess, her mother always made sure she wouldn’t notice most of it as the big scary thing that it was, instead turning a lot of things into games for her to take Maya’s fear on bad days. Maya grew up as an only child after her father left her and her mother for his new family, but it never bothered her. She’d never been as close to him as she was to her mother, and when she heard again from him years later, her decision to loose contact to him was only proven to be the right choice again. As it had turned out, her father had broken the population law and had three more children, non of which she had ever met or knew the names of, and was now in prison. Something she was informed by her fathers new wife for reasons she’d never understand. When Maya got older, she had a lot of trouble finding a purpose in life. Non of the options seemed suitable for her, and really why try to fix a world that was already broken to an unrepairable state? So she helped out her mother with mini jobs, until she was almost 20.
On her 20th birthday, things changed. She was never a big fan of celebrating her birthday but her mother insisted each year, so like always they went out to a cute little restaurante to have a somewhat fancy meal before they’d head back home to watch movies. Only that this year they didn’t make it home. It hadn’t been very late when they made their way back home, it was supposed to be still safe out, but that thief didn’t care about the broad daylight (if you could even call it that, with the pollution around them). He came out of nowhere and before Maya could even react, her mothers purse was gone and a metal knife was stuck in her stomach. Everyone called the man desperate for forcing a knife into her mother, “probably a homeless man” , but all Maya knew that he was a murder.
After that day, Maya knew what she wanted to become. She wanted access to the data and people that would help her find that man and get revenge, so she became a soldier. She’d never lost much thought to this new world before, but during her training the thought of it became more and more prominent in her mind and a plan formed in her mind. The laws and world here would make it impossible for her to get the revenge and hurt that man the same way he hurt her, but in Alia Terra.. If she’d find a way there and get that man to come too, it’d be easy to get him Outside the Gates and there were a lot more possibilities and ways to hurt him.
So Maya made sure she’d be on top of all of her classes during her training to become a soldier and succeded. With her good grades , a lot of luck and one of her trainers’ connections, she was allowed to leave Alia Terra with the Ninth Pilgrimage almost right after she graduated and was a real soldier.
The first weeks in Alia Terra were horrible for the brunette. She’d known it wouldn’t be easy to adjust to the new atmosphere of this new world but she hadn’t expected this much of a change. While it was beautiful, the thought of living among dinosaurs, mostly poisiones plants and pre historic giant bugs was scary. Even if she’d never admit that. She’d gotten sick a lot during her first two months, her body having a hard time to adjust and she’d almost regret coming here but as soon as she got to start working as a guard Maya started to be able to appreciate the wonders and hard work that was put into Alia Terra. It almost made her forget about the reason she came here. Almost. While Maya loved her work as a guard, she wanted to become a ranger, reason being that if her plan would eventually succeed it’d be good to know more about the outside of the gate. At the start of her third year in Alia Terra she’d almost been in, but her ‘interest’ in the portal, the unexplored places and late night researchs, were reason to question her loyalty to Alia Terra and the other rangers, as the Commander had put it.
Despite that, it hadn’t come to Maya’s mind to join the Outsiders in any way. She knew that eventually she wouldn’t have another chance, if she ever went through with her plan and people found out about it, she wouldn’t be able to stay inside the gates, but until then she was going to be loyal to Alia Terra. She had come to love this new world and she had no problems with the Commander and the way they lead Alia Terra. The portal breaking had come as a shock to everyone, including Maya. She hadn’t thought it would be possible, although the fact that it was only working as a one way street, it seemed to be only a matter of time. While she didn’t even know if the man that murdered her mother was still alive on Earth 1, and there had always only been a small chance of her plan of getting him to Earth 2 working out, the portal breaking erased even the smallest chance of that and Maya wasn’t sure how to deal with that yet.
