Congrats Class of 2020
Idol!Mingi x reader
Summary: You’ve officially graduated from high school... but in the middle of Covid, and your boyfriend is nowhere to be found. So you celebrate by yourself. Or so you think
Warnings: fluff... lots of it
Word count: 1008
A/N: This was a little drabble I wrote for one of my besties when she graduated from high school. 2020 sucked for those who graduated, but Congrats on making it through! There’s a bright and better future for you all from here on out! 💜
Also requests are still open (:
“Congratulations on graduating, Y/n! You know Yunho and I would be with you right now if we could, but we love you and we’re so proud of you!” Janelle exclaimed over FaceTime. I waved her comment away, letting her know it was ok.
“You’re fine, dude! It’s not your fault that Covid had to happen. But thank you! I also appreciate the merch. Your package came in today.” I grabbed the box from behind me, showcasing all of the cute kpop merch items she sent me for my graduation. I set the box back down, preparing to ask the question that had been lingering in my mind all morning.
“Hey, have you all heard from Mingi today? He hasn’t called yet.”
“Oh. That’s interesting. No we haven’t, but I’m sure he’ll turn up sooner or later.” She answered. I let out a sigh, trusting that he eventually would.
“It’s cool. You know Mingi: always running behind.” I shrugged.
“Typical Mingi. We’re going to head to bed, but you enjoy your day, ok? Hey! BTS is performing at your “graduation” right?”
I giggled at her, my spirits lifting just a bit. “You’re right! I’ll talk to you later, Nellie. Bye, Yunho!”
“Bye!” They yelled before hanging up.
I placed my phone down on the table before officially starting my day with coffee. It was very much like Mingi to forget or let things slip his mind, but it confused me to how he could possibly forget today of all days. For the past few weeks he had been asking, repeatedly, what day my graduation was, in Pacific Standard Time and Korean Standard Time. At a certain point it had gotten a tad bit annoying that I told him that it had passed already. The look on his face was priceless.
I hope he remembered that it was just a joke, I thought to myself as I got myself all dressed up for my quarantine graduation party.
Being in a long-distance relationship was hard. But it was like this for the past almost 2 years. I had gone on a spring break vacation to Korea with my best friend, not thinking that I would bump into a kpop idol trainee, let alone the KQ Fellaz that Janelle and I had been blabbing on about for the past month. We ended up going on a few dates with a couple of them and exchanged KakaoTalk numbers before coming back home. A year later when they came to LA for KCON, we made it official and it’s been this way ever since. Other than the occasional trips to Korea, or a break in his US schedule, we didn’t really get to see each other often. It was just catching his Vlives here and there, and video calls at the weirdest times of the day. We made it work and I honestly couldn’t have asked for anything else. However, not hearing from him all day was making me feel a little uneasy. It wasn’t like he and I were fighting, but he had been quiet the past few days.
Snapping myself out of it, I decided to enjoy my day and watch the Dear Class of 2020 BTS performance on YouTube. As soon as their performance ended, I received a notification on my phone. Wiping my tears (yeah, Spring Day does that to some of us) I reached for my phone to see the one name I had been waiting for.
Mingi 🐻✨sent you a video
I sat myself on the kitchen counter and pressed play. There he was, sitting in front of the camera, while the rest of the boys were sitting behind him.
“Hi Shortie,” he started, “Congratulations on graduating from high school! I know that’s a great achievement for you and I’m so proud of you for pulling through, especially the past few years.” He shot me a few finger hearts before continuing with his little message.
“I know the past 2 years have been pretty difficult with our relationship and being so far away from each other, but we did it! We made it this far and to be honest I wouldn’t be where I am right now if it wasn’t for you.” He paused and chuckled nervously, looking back at his group members as they encouraged him to keep going. “Sorry I’m just a little nervous. You know how I am with these things. My english isn’t the best yet, and that’s why I have these guys here with me.” All the guys then waved and said congratulations, when all of a sudden the doorbell rang. I hadn’t been expecting anyone and so I chose to ignore it at first, and kept watching Mingi’s video.
“Hey, shouldn’t you get the door?” Mingi asked through the video, surprising me.
How did he know that the doorbell rang?
“You really should go get that, Shortie.” He repeated, then the video ended.
Confused, I got up from the couch and hesitantly approached the door and opened it. Who I found behind the door brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face.
“Surprise?” He said shyly.
“Mingers!” I jumped and wrapped my arms around him like a koala. “I’m so happy you’re here!” The tears I had been holding back while watching his video finally fell down my cheeks, realizing that this was why he hadn’t been contacting me all day.
I walked him into my apartment helping him bring his bags in before engulfing him in another hug.
“How did you get here? I thought you guys couldn’t leave because of Covid?”
“Well, when the manager said I could leave, I bought the first ticket out and it just happened to arrive the night of your graduation. But now I have to self-isolate for at least 2 weeks before I go back. Is it ok if I stay here until then?” He scratched the back of his neck before looking to me for my answer. I just smiled and reached up on my tippy toes to kiss him, a smile forming on both of our faces.
“I think that would be the best graduation present ever.”
