âWhen the Prophet  arrived at Medina he found that the Jews observed fast on the day of âAshuraâ. They were asked the reason for the fast. They replied, âThis is the day when Allah caused Moses and the children of Israel to have victory over Pharaoh, so we fast on this day as a sign of glorifying it.â Allahâs Messenger  said, âWe are closer to Moses than you.â Then he ordered that fasting on this day should be observed.â
â Ibn `Abbas, Sahih Bukhari, Book 63, Hadith 168.
âFasting âAshuraâ comes under three categories, the lowest is to fast it alone, better than that is to fast the ninth day with it, and the best is to fast the ninth and eleventh days with it.â
â Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar, Fath Al-Bari (4/246).
Fasting the Day of Arafah is an Expiation for Two Years!
On the authority of AbĹŤ QatÄdah al-AnᚣÄrÄŤ: âThe Messenger of AllÄh was asked about fasting on The Day of âArafah. [He replied]: âFasting on the day ofâArafah is an expiation of last yearâs and next yearâs sins.â [Collected by Muslim, 1162].
It is the day on which the religion was perfected and Allaahâs Favor was completed:
In Al-Saheehayn, it was reported from âUmar ibn al-Khattaab (radiallaahu 'anhu) that a Jewish man said to him, "O Ameer al-Mu`mineen, there is an aayah in your Book which you recite; if it had come to us Jews, we would have taken that day as an 'Eid (festival).â 'Umar said, âWhich aayah?â He said (what means): This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. [al-Maa`idah, ayah 3]. 'Umar said, âWe know on which day and in which place that was revealed to the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). It was when he was standing in 'Arafaah on a Friday." Allaah Swears by these 10 Days, odd and even: Allaah swears by these days. 1. By the dawn; 2. By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah), 3. And by the even and the odd . [al-Fajr, ayat 1-3]Â
The Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, The ten are the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah and the odd is the Day of Arafah and the even is the Eid.[Ahmad 3/327, and Bazzar 2286] Ibn Rajab graded the isnad of this hadeeth as being Hasan.

Teaching This to Others:
âI found in the book of the Shaikh, the Imaam, my grandfather, aboo âAbdullaah Muhammad ibn âAdee Hamdawaih as-Saaboonee (rahimahullaah taâaala), Abul-âAbbaas, al-Hasan ibn Sufyaan an-Nasawee informed us that al-âAbbaas ibn Sabeeh narrated to them (saying): âAbdul-Jabbaar ibn Taahir narrated to us (saying): Maâmar ibn Raashid narrated to me (saying): I heard Ibn Shihaab az-Zuhree saying,
âTeaching a sunnah is more superior than two hundred years of worship.â
(Usool-u-Sunnah by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullaah), Chapter Six: The Distinguishing Signs of Ahlus-Sunnah).
On the authority of Abi Masâood âUqbah bin âAmr al-Ansaaree al-Badaree -may Allah be pleased with him- he said: The Messenger of Allah -sallahu âalayhi wasallam- said:Â Whoever directs someone to good, then he will have the reward equal to the doer of the action.[Muslim (1893)].
âWhoever fasts during the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal will be (rewarded) as if he had fasted the entire year.â
â The Messenger of Allah , by way of Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari, Muslim, 1164.
âFasting âAshuraâ comes under three categories, the lowest is to fast it alone, better than that is to fast the ninth day with it, and the best is to fast the ninth and eleventh days with it.â

â Ibn `Abbas, Sahih Bukhari, Book 63, Hadith 168.
The scrolls of Abraham were revealed on the first night of the month of Ramadan, and the Torah was revealed on the 6th day of Ramadan. The Gospel was revealed on the 13th day of Ramadan and the Psalms on the 18th day of Ramadan and the Qurâan was revealed on the 24th of Ramadan.
The Prophet, narrated by Waathilah Ibnil Asqaâ. Collected by Tabaraani and Baihaqi and declared âHasanâ by Shaykh Al-Albaani in Saheehul Jaamiâ 1497. (via wayofthesalaf)
The Prophet  said: âDu'a of the fasting person is answered.â

The Companions of Muhammad â used to be the quickest to break the fast and the slowest in taking the pre-dawn meal.â

Revive a Sunnah: Take the Pre-dawn Meal as Late as Possible
Sâlim b. âUbayd reports, âI used to stay in the house of AbĂť Bakr. One night, he prayed for as long as Allâh willed him to. He then said [to me], âGo and see if al-fajr has started,â so I went, returned and said, âWhiteness has risen in the sky.â So he prayed for as long as Allâh willed, then said [again], âGo and see if al-fajr has started.â I went out, returned and said, â[The light] is spreading out and becoming reddish,â to which he said, âNow bring me my drink (i.e. my pre-dawn meal, al-suhĂťr).ââ Al-DâraqutnĂŽ, Al-Sunan 2:166. Al-DâraqutnĂŽ grades its chain of transmission sahĂŽh.
Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and hope for reward, his past sins will be forgiven.

The following Ebook was transcribed from a tele-lecture by ash-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Rabeeâ al-Madkhalee hosted by Muwahhideen Publications on 9th August 2012 entitled, âThe Virtue and Excellence of the Last Ten Nights of Ramadhaan.â
Herein, the Shaykh discusses pertinent matters related to Taraweeh, Laylatul Qadr, the last ten night of Ramadhaan in general and other salient points of benefit.
~ An excerpt taken from the Ebook ~
âDear brothers, this is going to be the last part of this phone lecture and we really need more action than statements. From the wisdom of Allah is that He has hidden the Night of Decree from us and we do not know exactly when it is going to be in the last ten in the month of Ramadhaan. And He told His Prophet exactly when it would be and when the Prophet went out to his Companions to tell them exactly when the Night of Decree will be, he found two of the Muslims arguing with one another, asking him to judge between them so he became busy with their affair and was made to forget exactly which night is the Night of Decree in the last ten of Ramadhaan. This in itself indicates and shows us how bad it is to disagree with one another and how bad it is to fight amongst the Muslims, so much so that Allah took away the knowledge of the exact day of Laylatul Qadr in the last ten. That is one way of looking at it.â
