The flag of the city of Athens.
from /r/vexillology Top comment: Looking deceptively old-fashioned, it was in fact introduced as recently as 2001, by a Mayor with a penchant for history (he was, after all, the man who signed a cease-fire with Sparta, 25 centuries after the end of the Peloponnesian war). The flag can be seen everywhere in the city but its design and concept have become a target of criticism by many. Some object to the irrationality of ancient godess Athena on a Christian cross, while others claim that the design is much too similar with the emblems of the Greek police and a local extremist right-wing party. They may have a point, but I don’t see the new mayor ordering new flags any time soon. Let’s not forget, this is a time of crisis.

The Hind Rajab Foundation has identified the Israeli individual who attacked Palestinian demonstrators yesterday in Syntagma Square, #Athens #Greece, as David Hadar. He is a sergeant in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Golani Brigade, a unit repeatedly implicated in war crimes in Gaza. The incident on Saturday, 13 September 2025, in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, resulted in injuries and the arrest of all involved. Hadar is now under arrest, and the HRF is sending a formal letter to the Greek authorities, calling for a thorough investigation into his role in both the Athens attack and potential war crimes by the Golani Brigade. In March 2024, Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters assaulted a man with a Palestinian flag in Syntagma Square, #Athens. In November 2024, in #Amsterdam, they were filmed tearing down Palestinian flags, chanting "death to Arabs," and attacking Palestinians and Arabs before wider clashes erupted. These incidents show that individuals connected to Israel's war in Gaza are bringing the same aggressive conduct abroad, turning European public spaces into extensions of that violence. Greek authorities must act decisively in the case of David Hadar. They must uphold their duty to investigate and hold war crime suspects present on their territory accountable.
