Thinking about how Maggie didn't recognize Leroy's face in the epilogue and how someone wouldn't forget a face like that
and now I'm trying to remember if Cyanide was always a villain that the public didn't see the face of/mockery of, and was on the down low, or if this means something else

Reading a fascinating linguistics article for class about metaphors of time perception and it really highlighted how uptight western cultures are with the future and just sigh. I think we would all benefit from learning from other cultures to relax a bit about it
To summarize. There are in general 3 different ways of looking at time—linear, cyclic, and event-based—and while all cultures have a mix of all of them, one tends to be more prevalent. Western culture is very linear-focused, while the other culture it was examining, Malagasy, is more event-focused.
Imagine yourself in a timeline for a second (well there goes the metaphor revealing itself already, a time line). Western languages do in fact tend to see time as a line, and place themselves as facing the future—hence common phrases like “foresight” or “in the days ahead of us.” Malagasy language is oriented looking towards the past, with the future behind—the past is known and can be seen and the future is indistinct and cannot be seen, because no one has eyes in the back of their head.
So, linear time models like that make time a tangible thing that can be saved or used or wasted, while event-based models are more relaxed and wait for things to happen to respond to them—they’re much more go-with-the-flow. And I just. I am so tired can we please relax about things just a little bit. Time is subjective etc etc
(Don’t get me wrong, there are pros and cons to any of these time systems, I just think a little more of a mix might be nice sometimes)
