warning(s): stress over school and one (1) curse, but other than that it’s pure fluff
“Why aren’t you asleep?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You considered yourself a fairly smart person.
You had earned a scholarship to get here, you took hard classes, and your friends came to you for help from everything to school problems to just general every day things.
But for a “fairly smart person”, you made a lot of bad decisions.
You knew that taking on a part time job wasn’t a good idea when you already had so much going on. You knew that taking 8am’s wasn’t a good idea when you were already a night owl. You knew that saying yes to that night out with your friends wasn’t a good idea when you had a huge paper due in two days.
(It was worth it, though.)
You knew all of this before you decided to take on the world, but dammit, you were still allowed to complain. Besides, getting anywhere in the world required sacrifice — if your sacrifice entailed having more caffeine flowing through your veins than blood, then so be it.
Making up for your mistake of wanting a social life was proving to be much more difficult than you planned — you were on page seventeen of a twenty page paper, and you were stuck in a rut. You had written and rewritten the same sentence more than twelve times; it was like your brain was going on strike in protest of what you had put it through.
The lights in your room suddenly flicked on and you blinked rapidly to get used to the sudden onslaught on your eyes. You had been staring at your computer screen for so long that you were sure the document was burned into your irises, and this extra brightness was not helping. You squinted and looked to the doorway to see who the perpetrator was, and despite the mix of sleep deprivation and deliriousness you were experiencing right now, the corners of your lips quirked up in a small smile.
It was none other than your boyfriend. You were a bit surprised to see Sokka up at this hour — he took hard classes as well, but he was better at managing his time than you were — but just seeing him made you feel ten times better.
“Why aren’t you asleep?” Sokka asked as he leaned against the doorframe.
“Work. This paper is due tomorrow, and I only have a couple pages left until I’m done. Why are you awake?” You countered playfully.
“‘I’m awake because my girlfriend doesn’t know what a proper work-life balance is,” he answered, though there was real concern in his voice. “How long have you been working on this for? It’s three thirty, you have to be up in four hours.”
“All day,” you managed through a yawn. “I’m almost done, but I’m just- I’m stuck on this one part, and it’s infuriating.”
He hummed in acknowledgement and walked over to you, draping his arms around your shoulders and giving you a light kiss on your temple. “Have you ever thought that you can’t focus because you’ve been staring at this screen for eight hours?”
You closed your eyes and leaned into his embrace, feeling the most at peace that you had this whole week. “I mean- it has crossed my mind, but I’m fine! As soon as I get past this sentence, it’ll be smooth sailing. I only have three pages left, I can survive off of four hours of sleep.”
“Alright,” he sighed. You thought that Sokka had conceded until you felt his arms around you, and you squealed as he lifted you out of your chair.
“Sokka!” You laughed, swatting his arm in a very low effort attempt to get free. “What in the world are you doing?” You tried as hard as you could to inject some form of anger into your voice, but you couldn’t be mad at him in such a ridiculous situation.
“Sometimes I need to take things out of your hands, and apparently your sleep schedule is one of them,” he grinned. He was carrying you bridal style through your apartment, your arms now looped around his neck for support.
“Excuse me? I am perfectly capable of maintaining—” your own claim was foiled with the interruption of a yawn; even your body was against you at this point, “— a proper sleep schedule.”
“I’ll believe it when I see it.” By now, the two of you had reached your room and Sokka gently set you down on the bed before climbing in next to you. You turned your head slightly to meet his eyes — you were always captivated by the oceans that were held in them. “Just trust me. You trust me, right?”
“Of course.”
“Then believe me when I say that not being sleep deprived does wonders for the mind,” he chuckled. You leaned forward the slightest bit and pressed a kiss to his lips, already finding your way into his embrace.
“Okay,” you murmured, nestling your head into pillows and humming contentedly at the warmth he brought you. “Just this once.”
And laying there, together with Sokka, it didn’t take too long for you to fall asleep. Just before you drifted off, you felt him press another kiss to your hairline, and you smiled unconsciously. Your mind couldn’t be farther away from the task that you had been so feverishly working on just minutes prior.
That paper could wait until the morning.
10. “Stop moving and let me braid your hair.” with Zuko?
mrs magic
zuko x f!reader
summary: you take zuko to a little getaway spot and braid his hair.
navigation // atla masterlist
a/n: just something short & sweet :)
A lot was on Zuko’s mind that day. It was evident to Y/N, so when she offered to take him to a “secret place,” he was a little perplexed, but accepted the invitation.
“C’mon, we’re almost there, Zuko!” She said as she sprinted ahead of him. He breathed out a nervous laugh, and sped up his stride. The pair were walking down a dirt path through a forest that Y/N jokingly promised wasn’t leading Zuko to his murder.
“How much further?” He groaned as he caught up to her. They appeared to reach the edge of the forest. She stopped abruptly, causing the boy to bump into her shoulder.
“Hey, watch it!” Y/N yelped as she playfully shoved him. “We’re here!” The girl pointed forward and grinned. Zuko looked ahead to where she was pointing, and it was... a meadow? This was the secret place?
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” She asked before grabbing his wrist and pulling him towards the tall, grassy area. It wasn’t very big, just a small circled area that was surrounded by the tall trees of the wilderness. She lead him to the center of the circle, and plopped down, sitting with her legs criss crossed. Zuko hesitantly sat down across from her, and gave her a confused look.
“I come here sometimes when life decides to be an asshole,” Y/N explained before leaning back, using her arms to prop herself up. She stretched out her legs and planted them on Zuko’s criss crossed legs.
“It’s...it’s actually kind of nice,” He admitted, looking around at the pretty sight. It was so quiet, minus the occasional chirping of birds.
“It’s just a nice place to clear your head,” She said, shrugging. “Now you have to promise to keep this place a secret. I don’t need any normies running around here!”
“Yeah, yeah, your secret’s safe with me,” Zuko laughed. He extended his arm out and held out his pinky to her. Y/N grinned once again and linked her pinky to his. They giggled before unlinking the sacred promise ritual they shared.
“Now, talk to me. What’s been on your mind?” The girl spoke, standing up from her spot in the tall grass. She made her way behind him, which filled Zuko with more confusion. He twisted his neck around to look up at her when he began to feel her take his shoulder length, raven hair into her hands.
“What’re you doing?” He questioned.
“Stop moving and let me braid your hair,” She replied, sending him a stern expression. Zuko chuckled lightly and complied. He started to dump all of his stresses onto to Y/N as she wove his hair together. When the braid was complete, she tied the bottom with a hair tie, placed the braid over his shoulder, and hummed with satisfaction. He placed his fingers around the end and smiled softly.
“Thanks,” Zuko breathed out as she walked around to face him. She sat down directly in front of him, mimicking his sitting position.
“Anytime,” Y/N replied, leaning forward and pressing a small kiss to the tip of his nose.
Summary: Two enemies, Sokka and Y/N get partnered for a science project...
“Alright everyone, here are your partners for the upcoming science project.” The science teacher gestured to the board. Sokka squinted to see who he got partnered with. He hoped it was one of his friends, like Aang, or Suki. He would even settle for Toph.
Sokka and...Y/N.
Out of everyone in his class, he had to get partnered with the person he hated the most: Y/N. He didn’t even know why he hated her so much. It wasn’t the way she looked or anything; in fact, he thought she was actually quite cute.
Sokka heard Y/N sigh next to him.
“Looks like we’re partners,” she said, with a sad tone.
“I don’t like this any more than you do.” She rolled her eyes and faced the teacher once again.
She sighed again when the teacher told everyone to work on their projects with their partner after school.
“At this rate, you’ll be sighing all day,” Sokka commented, earning another sigh from her. She shook her head and began to speak.
"I'll pick you up and we can work on it at my house," she offered. Sokka scoffed.
"Nope, no way I'm going into your home. We'll work at the library near my house," Sokka said. Y/N shrugged and headed out the door, getting to her next class.
Hours later, the final bell rang, signaling that the classes were over for the day. Sokka jumped out the door, relieved the day was over.
Oh. He still had the project to do. He cursed and luckily turned the corner to see Y/N walking by.
“Y/N! Hey, Y/N!” She turned at the sound of her name, but quickly turned around again, continuing to walk away as if nothing happened when she realized it was Sokka calling her. “We have the project, remember?” he called out. She froze, muttered something under her breath, and turned back around.
She reluctantly got into Sokka's car, and the two drove to their destination. However, they parked before they got to the library. Y/N looked confused.
"Why- why are we here?" Y/N gestured towards the sign saying "Ba Sing Se Hospital." Sokka rolled his eyes and grabbed her arm, leading her closer to the hospital, no matter how much she resisted. He tried to push her past the automatic doors; the smell of sanitizer and medicine was overwhelming even before they went in. He looked at Y/N, who was backing away, refusing to walk in. Strange. She almost looked... panicked.
"I have a friend here that can give us some info for our project. Don't tell me you're scared of hospitals," he said, annoyed. No response. Instead, she turned around and walked the other way.
"Hey! Come back here," Sokka yelled. When she didn't respond, he rolled his eyes, and followed her. "Y/N, come on." He hit her side playfully, and she stumbled.
"Jerk," she muttered.
"Come on, I didn't even hit you that hard. Let's go."
"Uh- no. N-no thanks." Was her voice... shaking? Peering at Y/N, she seemed to have trouble breathing; her breaths were quick and uneven. Suddenly, she swayed to one side, almost toppling over and tripping on herself, making Sokka instinctively reach out to catch her. She leaned on the hospital’s exterior wall next to her, closing her eyes, still breathing heavily.
“What, are you faking?” he said with a scoff, but he couldn't deny that he was starting to get concerned. He got closer to Y/N. "Umm... are- are you okay?"
“Get... get off me...” she whispered, not having enough energy to speak up or completely push him away. Oh... she was actually not okay.
Sokka, despite her efforts to push him away, got closer, trying to see what was wrong.
"Sokka... I just told you to get off." She sounded tired, and her voice was quiet. Y/N was nearing tears, and Sokka was unsure how to respond. He chose to get off of her, and she huffed, but she rubbed her forehead, sighing.
Y/N sank into the ground, sitting into a fetal position, now unable to stay standing, and she rested her head on her knees. She ran her fingers through her hair, trying to get some sort of grip.
“Should- should I go get a doctor?” Sokka pointed towards the hospital doors. She shook her head, looking up breathlessly.
“No!" she yelled. Sokka gave a quizzical look, and she cleared her throat. "No... I’ll be fine.” She took deep breaths and wrung her hands, making Sokka frown. What's wrong?
"Would it be better if we went back into my car?" Sokka asked. Y/N nodded weakly, so Sokka helped her up, but her knees buckled, and Sokka raced to catch her again.
"Actually-" Y/N sat back down with a huff. "I- I can't walk right now, just... just give me a second." She ran her fingers through her hair again.
"O-oh. If you're comfortable, I can just carry you; you look like you're getting worse." It was true; Sokka was actually worried for Y/N, despite how much he claimed to hate her. She flinched when he reached out to her, making him hesitate, but eventually she nodded, and Sokka picked her up, bridal style.
Her body was shaking, and her chest was going up and down as she tried to breathe. They reached his car, and he placed her down into the passenger seat.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"No, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have brought you here. Do... do you have something with hospitals or something?" She stayed silent.
"Just... just a lot of trauma." Her eyes were looking outside the window, refusing to meet Sokka's. She cleared her throat, and quickly changed the subject, trying to get rid of the awkward tension in the car. "Any- anyways. Project?"
"Yeah, if you're up for it. Buckle up.” He drove to the library as quickly as possible. When he got there, there were no parking spaces. “Shoot.” He drove two streets down, finally finding a spot to park. “Sorry, it’s a bit far.”
“Alright,” she hoisted on her backpack. “Let’s go.” She hopped out of the car and started the walk towards the library. He sighed, and jogged to catch up with her.
Hours later, Y/N put her pen down and stretched, her chair squeaking. Looking at his phone, it was almost eight.
“I’m finally finished. Now, enough of this, and just...” She paused, looking for words to say. “...Remember to prepare for the presentation tomorrow. I’m going home.”
“See you... try to get some rest?” his voice went up at the end, asking a question. She rolled her eyes, but this time, with a playful smile. Hm. An improvement. He smiled to himself as soon as Y/N turned her back.
The next day started like every other, except for the fact that Sokka tried to cut back on his mean jokes, replacing them with somewhat loving ones. Thankfully, the two did great on their presentation, and so did the rest of their friends.
“Great job today!” Suki chirped. “Let’s celebrate with... some cake at the bakery?” Y/N clapped in delight.
“Yes! I’ll be right there.” She quickly packed up her things and grabbed her backpack. She jumped up at the table, and started to walk. Sokka laughed and decided to grab her backpack strap, making her grunt as she fell backwards. He stuck his tongue out with a smile as she glared at him, and she gave a sarcastic wave as she walked away, Sokka following close behind.
The walk to the bakery was nice, fun banter going on between the group. However, they happened to walk past the hospital from the day before. Y/N stumbled at the sight, but quickly tried to laugh it off. Of course, Sokka saw right through it. Thankfully they were going to just walk past-
“Oh, real quick, I have to check something with my nursing friend, can you guys wait for me in the waiting room? It’ll be quick, I promise.” Katara smiled, as she grabbed her bag, ready to go. Y/N’s mouth made an “o” shape, and Sokka saw her tense up.
“Uh, hey, Y/N? Let’s go for ice cream while we wait?” He pointed to the nearby ice cream shop, and her shoulders relaxed.
“Oh- yeah. Yes, of course!” Her eyes said a silent thank you as he pulled her away.
“Hm, nice to see you two getting along!” Aang chirped. Y/N smiled, as her and Sokka waved goodbye, heading to the ice cream shop together.
A snippet from an upcoming chapter of my zukka fic 10 Cups of Coffee and You’re Still Not Here. (It doesn’t give away any plot, just a nice moment I think)
“It’s okay, Zuko. It’s okay.”
Yet, for some reason, these are the words that break him. After being held together so loosely for so long, he has finally fallen apart.
Without warning the tears that Zuko has been blinking away start to fall.
Sokka brings him into a tight hug. His arms a safe place, familiar, although this was the first time he had ever been held in this way within them.
Sokka presses his cheek atop Zuko’s head and whispers to him like they’re the last two people in the world, like their existence depends on the words that he would shape for him just then.
“Zuko,” he begins, “I’ve never met anyone in the world who cares more about other people than you do. You have forgiven people I never could.... God, Zu. You’re just,” he pauses for a second to take a shallow breath, he starts again a bit quieter this time. “You’re just so good. I know you don’t believe that but you are, you’re better than so many people I know and I just- I wish you could see that. I wish you could see what we see in you. What the world sees in you.”
All of a sudden he pushes Zuko apart from him, holding him by the shoulders. Zuko can now see the slight wetness in his eyes. But Sokka is looking at him with such fierce intensity that he can’t think of much more.
With as much conviction as he can muster Sokka speaks once again, “But as much as you care about other people you need to put yourself first sometimes. You have to take care of yourself. If you keep pulling from inside you to make everyone else happy you’ll end up empty.” Sokka squeezes Zuko’s shoulders in both his hands, “Stop trying to set the world on fire, Zuko. You’ll only end up burning yourself.”
Zuko is stunned into silence, not really sure what to say to Sokka’s heartfelt monologue. For as long as he can remember no one has ever known the right thing to say to him when he was upset. He always assumed something was wrong with him, deemed inconsolable by those he loved most. Even his Uncle, the person who meant the most to him in this lifetime, had a hard time figuring out the right words to use as to not set him off. For most, Zuko was just a ticking time bomb with complicated wires to be cut in an order nobody knew; just an inevitable explosion.
But this... this was… different? The words seemed to come easily to Sokka, like he knew exactly what to say and how to say it. Like he understood.
With nothing to say just yet, Zuko brings himself back into Sokka’s embrace. Sokka doesn’t resist or say anything more, just lets Zuko calmly rest on his shoulder as he combs through the pieces of Zuko’s hair that have pooled messily around his shoulders.
Through stifled sniffles, Zuko begins to form the words, “I’m sorry.” but somehow those words feel helplessly wrong.
Then the thought occurs to him: An apology would be to do what he’s always done, undermine his own feelings to make sure that everyone else is okay. But Zuko now knows that Sokka isn’t consoling him to get something out of it. No. Sokka is there simply because he wants to be, like any friend would.
If Zuko really wants to be the person Sokka says he is, that will take a conscious effort, and Zuko decides right then and there that there’s nothing in the world more worth it.
Zuko tries again, this time taking a deep breath to calm himself and search for the right words to say.
It isn’t long before he’s smiling softly into Sokka’s shoulder.
In that moment, although he once again starts to feel the desire to apologize for being a nuisance, for being stupid, for being himself, he swallows those words and says, for what feels like the first time in his life, something right.
He looks Sokka directly in the eyes, and he says, “Thank you.”
Zuko stayed put in his chair, the tightness of his top knot made his hair hurt and his robes felt almost sufucating as he tried to make sense of how long he had been sitting here . It felt like hours but maybe not, he couldn't tell.
The background noise of the lords speaking and arguing over each other because of the new policies being implemented in Republic city hurt his head almost as much as his top knot did. Katara sure did a good job on it.
"What do you think , your lordship...?" Zuko heard from across the room as the chatter died down around him, awaiting his response. In truth he couldn't tell you what was just said that required his opinion , and he did feel bad. After all , Republic City was depending on him. As Zuko gives a quick look around the room to see everyone eagerly awaiting his comment he cleared his throat.
"Well.. I-" his shaky voice was interrupted by the big wooden doors slamming open and giggles erupted around the room , Bumi and Kya made their way inside , tripping over each other as they call Zuko's name and Bumi holds something in his hands.
"KYA! BUMI!" You could hear Katara's voice down the corridor , echoing as she started running after her children and into the room. Fast enough to grab Kya by the arm.
"Oh.. my lords.. Consider my biggest apologies , they just-" as her cheeks flushed. The lords quietly just stared at Katara and Zuko smiled as Kya got free from her mum's grasp and followed Bumi in to Zuko's side.
"THE TURTLE DUCK EGGS HATCHED! THEY HATCHED!!" Bumi yells in excitement as he holds a little new born turtle duck . Zuko picks up Bumi and sits him on his lap "that so great buddy!! What you going to call it?" Zuko asked as he smiled and pulled up Kya too , so she could also sit on his lap.
"I was thinking something cool like boulder or boomerangdude like uncle Sokka but dad said boomerangdude was extra lame, so I came for advice!!" he smiles brightly as he sets the little turtle duck on the table . Zuko's world has instantly melted away as he saw Bumi's excitement and Kya's interest. He loved them so much, and he was so glad him Katara and Aang were there to figure all the parenting stuff out. They are as much parents to Izumi as he is to Bumi and Kya , he couldn't believe another little one was also on the way.
Zuko had gotten distracted going through names options with the children as Katara made awkward conversation with the lords. None of them dared to interrupt the firelord as they knew better than to interject.
"Katara?" A deep voice was heard from the door, this time Aang stood by the door , calling everyone's attention (even Zuko's) towards himself. "Daddy , you were wrong, boomerangdude is a cool name and that's final" interjected Bumi before Aang or anyone could say anything else.
The silence in the room was priceless until Katara couldn't hold it in anymore and started laughing very loudly , soon joined by her two lovers. The lords didn't seem to find the humour in this silly and non formal situation but the three just brushed the weird stares off as they kept laughing.
Bumi looked at Kya in a 'idunno' expression as both kids just kinda looked at each other in confusion as to what was so funny . After the giggles of the 3 adults died down , Bumi grabbed his new friend "boomerangdude" off the table and kissed Zuko goodbye , dragging Kya behind him before she could get a cuddle herself.
"I'm sorry my lords , usually things do not go this way. We will leave you to it" said Aang as he bowed in respect. The lords acknowledged the avatar giving him a small bow in acknowledgement.
"Yes, we are very sorry as well your lordship. " Said Katara matching Aang in her gesture . Zuko blushed and just tried to look as formal as possible, giving them time to both leave and quietly shut the door behind them.
"could we just recapitulate?" Said Zuko to the lords who seemed discontent with the interference in their business, but Zuko could not bring himself to care as his family always made his boring day a thousand times better.
after ba sing se, you felt lost. you felt empty.
you thought that things might’ve been different, but one look in his eyes down in the catacombs proved to you that he had never changed. maybe he had started to become someone else while working at the tea shop, but he had never truly changed. he was just waiting for a chance like this to come along. a chance to regain his honor, a chance to go back to the man who did nothing but harm him, a chance to become a hero to the fire nation.
a chance to betray you.
you didn’t know how he could throw away years of friendship for years of abuse, give up someone he loved for a sister who manipulated him, but you realized your own feelings had blinded you. his actions proved he never loved you at all.
i, i know where to lay
i know what to say
it’s all the same
all of your friends were worried for you. they knew the relationship you had had with zuko, but they had no idea how much it truly weighed on you. you hid your feelings, choosing to let your tears out at night and as silently as you could. whenever someone asked if you were alright, they got a simple “i’m fine” in return. for a while, you locked everyone out. you barely acknowledged katara when she tried to talk to you, and every time sokka asked you to train you just told him you weren’t feeling up to it. even hakoda questioned his children about you, but they could only tell him what you told everyone else. toph was the only one who knew to leave you alone.
as time went on, you slowly became better. taking over the fire nation ship might have helped boost your morale and quench your desire for revenge against your home nation, because after that you began spending more time around others again. it was in that time that you and the water tribe boy started to develop a relationship.
after sokka got over his distrust of you because of your fire nation heritage, the two of you began training together. as the only two non benders in the group it gave you something to do while aang trained with katara and toph, and it was mutually beneficial. you got to teach sokka fire nation techniques and give him more advanced advice that you learned from being around generals, soldiers, and other sword fighting masters; he got to teach you water tribe styles of fighting and keep you sharp by sparring with you.
you began training with him again, but something just felt different. you began hanging out more outside of sparring — it started with just sitting together in silence, usually at night after most of the crew had gone to sleep. eating together after training sessions or at mealtimes. then it became more.
now if i keep my eyes closed he looks just like you
but he’ll never stay, they never do
sokka became a comfort to you. maybe it was because you had been around him for so long that he was like a desperately needed constant in your life, but you found yourself drifting towards him during the weeks at sea on the fire nation ship. water was the element of change, but it felt like he was the only thing for you that stayed the same.
now if i keep my eyes closed, he feels just like you
but you’ve been replaced, i’m face to face with someone new
you didn’t know when you started feeling that way towards him, but one thing led to another. under a moonless night sky, the two of you shared a kiss.
when you pulled away you were out of breath and flushed, and sokka just smiled at you. he thought it was because of nerves, or that maybe he was just that good of a kisser. but you were terrified, because you could only see, you could only feel zuko.
sokka was usually naturally cool being from the water tribe, but tonight his lips were burning. it felt the same as the kiss you shared with zuko, your first and only kiss with him before he was banished from the fire nation.
you returned the smile, hoping he couldn’t see the uneasiness behind it, and leaned back in. he met you in the middle and you kissed again, trying to push the feeling in your gut back down.
would’ve gave it all for you, cared for you
so tell me where i went wrong
you felt horrible. you felt like you were playing with sokka’s heart, but you just didn’t know how else to cope. you didn’t know if you liked him or if you were just using him to make yourself feel better. you thought that if you leaned into how you felt about sokka, if you just went along with it, that you would be able to get over your feelings for the prince, that you would be able to leave it in the past.
you pivoted on your foot, just narrowly avoiding the blast of flames going by, and lunged forward with your momentum. you slashed at zuko’s feet causing him to jump out of the way, and you took advantage of the momentary loss of balance to knock into him with your shoulder. he fell to the ground with a grunt and you looked down at him, grinning and breathing heavily as you lowered your sword.
“that wasn’t fair!”
“just because you’re the prince doesn’t mean that every loss is unfair!”
“yeah, but you caught me off guard.”
“prince zuko, the whole point of sword fighting is to catch your opponent off guard. now come on, let’s go again.”
you reached down your hand but he didn’t take it, instead staring at you for a few moments.
“what?”
“just.. call me zuko. we’re friends, so you don’t have to use titles.”
you paused for a moment, feeling your cheeks heating up, before nodding with a smile. “alright, pr— zuko.”
he took your hand and you helped pull up back up, and you noticed the faintest blush coating his face as well. “thank you, y/n.”
“thank you, y/n.”
“y/n”.
“y/n!”
you were jolted back to the present to see sokka waving his hand in front of your face. “hellooo? earth to y/n?”
you gave a shaky smile and blew out a breath as you lifted your sword back up again. “yeah! sorry, i just spaced out for a second there.”
sokka nodded slowly with a strange look on his face, one that disappeared as quickly as you noticed it. “okay. let’s go again.”
would’ve traded all for you, there for you
so tell me how to move on
your relationship with sokka grew stronger, but it felt like you were being torn in two. you loved sokka, you truly did, but you didn’t know if it was solely platonic love. a part of you knew that you were latching onto sokka because you were selfish. you felt so betrayed by zuko that you couldn’t help but wonder if something was wrong with you, and someone so good like sokka showing interest in you made you feel like maybe you were good too.
but you weren’t. you were just a lost kid playing with an innocent boy’s heart because the boy they had loved as a child had left. so you kept telling yourself that you loved sokka.
but it was a lie.
he don’t realize that i’m thinking about you
it’s nothing new, nothing new
because even after all zuko had done, you still loved him.
“you and me always forever” // “you know you’ve got me in your pocket”
A picnic in the Fire Nation’s Royal Palace Gardens was a reoccurring date Firelord Zuko shared with his girlfriend, Y/N.
The turtle ducks chirped as a warm breeze blew softly. Zuko watched her take a bite of a fruit tart, and then wipe the crumbs from her mouth. He smiled gently and scooted closer to her on the picnic blanket. He noticed her gaze drawn up towards the sky, and she pointed up at it.
“Look, Zuko. That cloud looks a cherry blossom,” She said, smiling. He nodded and grinned before she stood up from her spot on the blanket. She moved towards one of the cherry blossom trees in the garden, and picked one off of the grass below. She made her way back over and plopped herself down, her legs criss crossed. She raised her hand up and gently placed the flower behind Zuko’s ear.
“Such a cutie,” She commented, grinning wide. Zuko’s cheeks quickly flooded with a light shade of red. Then it hit him. This was it. This was the moment. He reached inside of the picnic basket.
“Can you grab me another tart?” Y/N asked him. He nodded. His hand grasped a tart, and the other grasped a box. He pulled the tart out and placed it in front of her. Then, the box.
She stared down at that box, completely forgetting about the dessert. Her eyes were wide and her eyebrows were raised.
“Y/N,” Zuko started, his voice quiet. “I can’t ever imagine us being apart. I want you by my side for...for forever.”
The girl looked up at him, her voice caught in her throat. A wave of surprise took over her completely.
“Marry me?” Zuko proposed, opening the box to reveal a beautiful ring.
Y/N’s mouth gaped open. She suddenly felt a burst of excitement and launched forward, colliding with Zuko and wrapping her arms around his neck. She nodded eagerly as tears struck her eyes.
Y/N and her friends were gathered around the coffee table, just about to end a round of Uno.
“I win!” Aang shouted, as he threw down his last green card. Everyone else groaned as they put all the cards back into the pile, ready to start again.
“Wait I have an idea.” Suki grabbed Sokka and Y/N’s shoulders and brought the two together. “You two should go hang out together. Alone.” Suki pushed the two towards the balcony, and Y/N laughed. What was this about?
Y/N wasn’t complaining though. She liked having alone time with Sokka, even if it was just as friends. The view from the balcony was also amazing. She gazed at the city lights, which were beautiful at night. The lights from skyscrapers twinkled, a small wind brushed against her, and the faint sound of cars and birds were calming to her. She felt Sokka’s eyes on her, but she didn’t mind.
"So... did you know that all of our friends have a bet going that we end up together?" She instantly whipped her head around to face him, but Sokka now kept his eyes away from her, doing anything to avoid her gaze.
“Oh... really?" She did in fact know, but Y/N just wanted to see his reaction. “Hmm, that must be why they pushed us together like this.” she said. “How much are they betting?” Sokka turned his head around hesitantly.
“Well... I don’t know for sure. Somewhere around a hundred dollars. Toph says ‘we’re too chicken’ and says we won’t be an item.” He smiled, making his beautiful eyes sparkle, and she couldn’t help but smile back. “However, everyone else seems to say that we’re going to date... sometime soon.” His voice trailed off, because he noticed she was staring. Clearing his throat, he looked away, and so did Y/N.
Why did it have to be so awkward...?
“I mean- we don’t want Toph to win, do we?” The words slipped out of her mouth before she could think about what she said. She was just... so desperate. She had been yearning for Sokka since the minute they met, and well this was an opportunity... right?
Sokka didn't answer, instead choosing to gawk at Y/N, as if she said something illegal.
Maybe she shouldn’t have said tha-
“Of course we don’t want her to win. Might as well give the people what they want?” He was smiling once again, brushing off his shock and showing off his bright eyes that became even brighter when he smiled.
“Yeah. Yeah might as well-” she said, with a blissful laugh. The laugh was cut short; interrupted by Sokka’s lips on hers. She made some sort of gasp before quickly melting onto the kiss. Sokka pulled back to say something, a big smile on his pink face.
“If I’m being honest, I’ve wanted to do this since we were children...” His eyes were beaming as they scanned all over her equally happy face.
“Me too, Sokka,” she whispered, before pulling him into another kiss.
The two walked back to the others, who were all currently handing Suki money. Sighing, Y/N plopped down next to them.
“What did Suki bet?” she asked.
“That you two would get together today. And... it seems like she was right,” Katara said, gesturing to Y/N and Sokka, who were sitting together hand in hand, faces bright pink.
“Thanks!” piped Suki, collecting all the money into her wallet. Y/N let out an exasperated laugh.
At least two good things came out of the bet. Suki got the money, and Y/N had gotten a kiss from Sokka.
EEK SOOOO that’s that. please tell me what you think!!
