Do not judge marginalized groups for how they respond to violence against their own land and communities!
I know this is probably minor or maybe not a huge deal but I'm on the hunt for some decent Jet/Katara fics and I have to say, demonized is an understatement of how some of the people in this fandom see Jet.
Like either he's a fuckboy, a cheater, or he likes giving Katara emotional and physical scars and it's honestly sickening.
In one fic I read when I was younger, he was almost portrayed as a serial killer! Even a comment under mine called it out, saying he's way more complex than just being evil.
Like, I like Jetara smut. A lot. But sometimes I want fluff but can hardly find anything decent aside from a handful of stories.
And yes I'm working on some but it's really sad how we can't get them in the atla fandom.
And I don't want people in the comments or reblogging saying "wELL he DiD tRy to KiLL iNNocENT pEoPLe" because if you haven't noticed, the show is written by two white men who have never dealt with any after effects of colonization or imperialism. They have no idea what it's like being oppressed and having other people inhabit your country and colonize it.
Jet could've handled things better, sure. But you have to understand: he's a war child. He is also an orphan who has to take care of a whole ass group of orphans by himself all while dealing with his own traumas from losing his parents to the Fire Nation. (He is to the Freedom Fighters what Katara is to the Gaang—the rock.)
His entire character is written from the perspective of white people. Specifically white men. So believe me when I say I take whatever they think on colonization and war with a grain of fucking salt. In fact, I blame Bryke for the fandom's perception of Jet. And they "redeemed" his character only to kill him afterwards. Possibly to get rid of any other potential love interests for Katara but I digress.
Even throughout history, many slaves killed and revolted against the slave masters and killed their families. Many indigenous/black people have killed countless colonizers. It's part of war. It's gonna happen.
I always heard that if you want a certain book on the shelf, then you have to write it yourself, so that's what I'm doing.
I should have never dipped my foot into the atla fandom. Now whenever I feel like watching this childhood show of mine, thoughts of toxic comments come to my mind and completely ruin this picture of nostalgia.
I wish one day, I will be able to enjoy it again without the memories of the fandom ruining it.
