The first season has a lot of episodes with bad weather and storms. What do you make of that?
Well there are a couple of important and/or symbolic storms we can look at.
First, while it’s not a storm, we see a nice shot of a cloud casting a shadow over Aang when he tells Katara that he never wanted to be the Avatar. Just like the camera framing we get where Zuko’s scar is routinely shown to be in the shadows, it serves to foreshadow or at least tell the audience that there is a sad story that we’re not yet aware of.
This brings us to “The Storm.” Here, we see how both Aang and Zuko try to survive a storm, all the while we learn about Aang and Zuko’s backstory. Here, the storm represents the inner turmoil of each character, and see how their struggles, just like the storm, brings them together after placing them in the situation they find themselves in at the start of the series.
And, while the blizzard in “Siege of the North” isn’t really symbolic, the storm still serves an important purpose by giving us a way to peer into Zyo’s psyche. After all, “there’s always something,” and he “doesn’t need luck.”
