so i read the comments on my sister's atlantic story, bad idea. it is almost hilarious how worked up people get, saying it is feminist or not feminist or whatever. i want to be like YOU GUYS ARE BEING IDIOTS, IT IS A FUNNY STORY ABOUT PANTIES OMG CALM YOUR TITS. but then i remembered something that they obviously did not: arguing on the internet is super stupid. &besides, good journalism pisses people off. end of story.

The Princess Phase 

I recently read the interesting article by Beta Dad about his struggle with the Disney Princesses.  My daughter went through a phase like that too.  She LOVED her purple dress and princess hat (see above).  She would never take them off, insisting on wearing them all around.  I drew the line at the front door, but my wife would occasionally avoid an argument by allowing her to wear them out to the grocery store or IKEA.  

This wasn't a major problem, but over time this impossible-to-wash garment acquired a certain hobo-osity.  It had brown stains and permanent food on it.  The lacy parts had rips and tears and it didn't clasp well in the back.  Imagine a prom queen who walks straight out of the prom and into the world, never to take her crown and dress off. Twenty years later, you are shocked to run into her on the A Train platform in her old prom dress.  Hobo-osity.  The charm had worn off, big time.  

But eventually my daughter grew out of the princess phase.  When your kid is very little, they latch onto things like that.  My daughter had a favorite blanket called her "Boosh." I don't know why.  At one point, a missing Boosh would be a DEFCON 1-level emergency.  But now she doesn't even need it.  Sometimes, feeling sentimental for the old days, I'll offer her the Boosh: "Want your Boosh?"  But Boosh takes a backseat to Lily, her dragon, and then to Peck, her Penguin, and then another week to her unicorn Pillow-Pet.  She's fickle now!  She'll move on to another big plush thing on any given week.  

So I say savor the phase.  Soon she'll be an iPad-obsessed, terrible-music loving tween in a "You-Don't-Understand-My-Life-Choices" phase.  I'd hold onto the Princess for a little bit.
